2018 Rhode Island Squid Report
#61
Seem to every night at some point. Might be at 2 or 4. But every night we've been here.

Late report: Went Monday night and got there a little late, 8:30pm,  there was some decent action

until it got dark then I had a big scup attack my jig and things really slowed down with a few flurries

every hour.  Wind was tough blowing big bows in the line and was a little cold.  I quit at midnight

with 19 squid in the pail. Did not see any swimming in the lights and ones I did get were deep and

out of sight.  Lost 3 jigs trying to stay near bottom.  My take just before the sun is going down the

squid seamed most active but at dark the scup move in and the squid shut down.

Alaska was that your pickup with the camper parked in the choice spot on the bridge?

Yes, that's us Janz. You did a lot better than us on Monday. We're you on Island side of the bridge? We tried there before you arrived. It was slow so came back to the mainland side which was also slow.

We'll be here today and tomorrow. Say hello if you see us. I'm the old guy with wild grey hair and beard. Ruta is the skinny little thing with white hair.

Ok I saw you both on the bridge.  I'm pretty much done for the year, got enough for bait

for this season.  May do boat trip with FF.  Check your messages.

So... based on your experience does it seem like the spring run in Newport is basically over or do we have another week or two?

Hopefully another batch of squid will move in but no eggs in the ones I caught.

Tonight was fantastic. I got 53 and sizes were really impressive. If I got that many, they must have been knee deep out there. Guess the run is not over.

Did the scup show up? Maybe they were making squid fishing a lot more difficult.

Another great trip to New England. We caught 118 squid in four days at GIB. There was a day that we pulled only 2 out of the ocean. The drive home was eventless. Relatively minimal traffic even around NY.

Met some really nice folks and hope to do a return trip in the near future.

Went fluke fishing this morning and there was a squid trawler out on the squid grounds right off the beach. On the way back from block there was a lot of squid showing on the sounder still. Should be good when you get back

Fished by boat on the east side of the Newport bridge and Goat Island area, only a half bucket between 3 guys. This was Thursday night into Fri AM. Anyone try the South County Beaches/PT Judith area?

Hit them pretty good between 9-10:30 pm last Tuesday at GI. Very steady. Haven’t been out since. Some of the boats out of Pt Judith are doing well. The run was definitely a little later this year.

Thanks Matt. We tried from 7 to 10 tonight at Galilee. Nothing. Probably go out on the Frances tomorrow. Then Newport on Thursday before heading home.

Went out last night on the Frances. Got a little less than 1/2 a bucket. Probably the median catch. High hook was a half bucket. Some did catch much less. Not spectacular but acceptable.
