Good luck Matt! I have never seen them before May. I've never tried RI, but I have fished Stonington in the end of April and early May.

Next week is early. The last week in April is a better possibly!

Gilligan, I live in CT and Stonington is much closer for me, but after about 5 or 6 times I'm about ready to give up. I just go to the town dock but rarily see many caught and have only got a few myself there...

With the warmer days ahead I expect there will be ink on the causeway by this weekend. I recall action started about the time the cherry blossoms in Newport were full.
See you there! DrCiro
Cold day on the causeway.. no sign of squid but they are deep towards the east...
Haddock up north.. so hopefully it'll turn in shortly. I'm back after a few years. Can't post pictures any more?

So hard to find squid reports online. I'm hoping to go out on Frances fleet when the squid get there.

Matt, thanks for the report!
Hobodave, I had business in Mystic last week of April-first week of May and always checked out Stonington but never really caught much there. We used to have a member from the area named Rusty Moore, who sometimes did well there, that's all I know of the area. If the Asians on the town dock are catching them anybody can but they do spend a lot of time there fishing. I think like anyplace else when the squid are in you'll get them there, when they're not you won't.

Went to GI Saturday evening 6-9. Very slow. There were a few squid caughtvfor probably 50 people jigging.

Going to give it a try Wednesday night on the Frances Fleet,
From what I've gathered it seems like the Hyannis run is beginning to thin out. Predators moving in. Anyone else going Wednesday? I'll be sure to let you all know how it turns out.

Mike let us know how you do. I'm going on FF saterday. I was at Hyannis last week and it was super awesome.

Went to GI last evening until dark. . Crowded on bridge. There was good squid action if you could squeeze in the hot spot.

Well last night on the Frances Fleet.
It was a hit or miss kind of night. Some folks got full buckets and others struggled to get just a few. There were differences in the style of jigs with small solid colors doing better than the yo-zuri type. Also lighter weights seemed like a good choice and a small weighted bottom jig actually, in place of a sinker, reeled in while jigging seemed to be the hot ticket. It did seem like the squid came in waves as there were times of nothing coming over the rail. But all in all it was a good trip especially when its one a 15 to 20 minute boat ride to the area we stopped at. Best of luck anyone that goes out this weekend on the Frances Fleet
In my experience the small 1.8 size Yamashita Naory jigs are the best. All orange, orange with white bellies, all pink or pink with white bellies are among my favorites. The usual YoZuris that are close to four inches long are too big and don't have the action of the Naorys. The Naorys are pricey but outfish all other jigs most of the time and should be used on light line like 6lb test. I also use a tiny snap which helps the action (no swivel, just a snap) which also makes changing jigs fast. Thank you and Matt for the reports!

Hasn't anyone been going out?

went to GI Friday night Saturday morning 5/16 - 5/17 I only got about 10. night squidding is better. I only caught 1 in the morning. guys with the generator and flood light were doing well, constant pick. I'm still using old school Coleman lantern lol been awhile for me since I squid fishing about 5 years ago. I wish there is a place to squid fishing closer to NJ. no squid in NJ at least not on land, we only catch them when we go off shore tuna fishing. we do have plenty of striped bass and blues in the bay or from surf.

I went on Frances Fleet sat night. It was a slow pick. The boat was over packed with people, I heard 70. Way too many people for me. The mates were a little annoying. They were trying to clean ink on every single squid caught. I don't need a mate reaching under my legs and around me while I'm fishing. Or using my personal towel I tied to the rail. Clean the boat when the fishing is done! One mate even tried to fish next to me and caused a tangle. No more FF for me.....not worth it...
