Newport, Ri - 2007 Squid Season
#1
Hi everyone, I have created a new topic for the Newport Rhode Island 2007 Squid Season.

The 2006 topic is available here but is closed for posting - link

Happy squid fishing in 2007!

Cheers, Glen <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':thumbsup2:' />
#2
Thanks for the update Glen,

Now all I need is some squid to go catch. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':thumbsup2:' />

I'm looking forward to what I believe will be a good spring run this year. This winter was a very mild one for us here in CT and RI.......Hopefully because of this fact, the run will start sooner than later....I'm going to guess April 16th, we start to see the little buggers....

Cheers.

This is my first post and 2nd year squid fishing. I love fishing period. There is a bait shop on rt 1 in westerly RI. Captain Don's I think. He is a friendly person. He showed me how to tye mulitiple jigs on a single line. Stop there if it is on your way to Newport.

I squidfished for the first time last year in Newport and Greenport RI - also off the MIsquamicut beaches - it's a riot! and so much fun! Can't wait to go again.

I used a big dropper loop -that way you can change the jig if you want a different color. Does anyone have other suggestions as to how to rig the jig?

My question is the same..... also do you get as much as in Newport ?
#15
Hi everyone. I'm new to this whole squid fishing experience. I would like to head out to Newport and try it out... but I'm not sure what I have to bring. After reviewing last season's postings, I've already purchased yozuri squid jigs and I'm shopping for a brinkmann underwater light. PLease fill me in on the essentials.... and what's a good time to go?! high tide?!

Here is something that could be useful as an alternative to the crowded bridge at Goat Island.

I did my first squid trip with them last summer and although I did not do as well as some of the "regulars" I still got a bunch of good sized squid.

HI everybody,This is my very first post,so if I'm a little bit inkey please understand....The loop idea is great used it for ordinary fishing usually tie a double overhand knot (or surgeons loop) If you don't want a loop you could use a uni knot it's very strong <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbsup2.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':firefighter:' />

Here's a nic tip for all of you who plan on going to Goat Island Bridge.....

I've had some of my best squiding outtings not even touching foot on the bridge....Try squiding from the sea wall, that neighbors the bridge.

I like to set up shop and kick back, yard chair, hang a coleman lantern over the side, coleman stove cooking up some grub...ect......When the squid are in, trust me, you don't have to fight with the bridge crowd to have a great outting....

Also, don't waste your money on cheep jigs......YoZuri is by far the best working jigs for this area.....I personaly think you only need two colors also,,,,,Pink seems to work all the time for me, but greens work good at times also..

Hope to see you out there this spring....

Mike K.....Where in CT are you coming from?...I'm up in New Britain..

You never know when they will be running heavy. I have seen them slam at low tide, high tide, half tide, day or night. You just have to be there at the right time. When they run...they run. You have to go a lot and hope you hit them. I bought one of those Brinkmann lights and used it off my boat. It looked so great hanging off the transom I almost creamed myself. I thought I would kill them. Proved to be no better for me than regular gas lantern. It was so bright I can not believe it did not work better. I have tried to hang it at all depths but nevr killed them with it. I have few new tricks I will try this year. If any work I will post them. Who knows...but I can not wait. Nothing better than fresh squid. I could never use these beauties for bait. Yum Yum
