Newport, Ri - 2007 Squid Season

Hows it going everybody. This will be my first full season. I only tried once last year at the very end. Looking for a few pointers. What do you need to do to the squid after catching (cleaning, ink, etc.)

If you plan to launch out of Newport you'll have to use Fort Adams. It is a terrible ramp bbut managable and there is parking. It is only a half mile run with the boat to the goat Island Bridge. My friend Jeff made homemade lights that go on 12V battery and fit in our rod holders on the boat. I also use a underwater squid light made by Brinkman that attaches to a 12 volt battery.

Hi Snaildarter...thanks for the info. I'll look into it...I will try Fort Adams but 1/2 boat drive is scary to me...still a newbie with boat too. Do you know Wellington Ave boat ramp and Polar street boat ramp?

According to some in here, these are public boat ramps but not too sure about parking for the trailer.

I only know about the Ft. Adams ramp. Look at the google satellite for the other two and see what they look like. Just put the address of Wellington and Polar St. in and check them out. Happy squidding. Snaildarter

Soo....watch where you park. I'm going back down after work tommarrow...i mean today...I've cleaned enough squid...time for bed. Cheers to my buddies on the bridge!

Yes I had a good noght also. I would have caught more but I had to spend time untangling the miss's line. The people with the genartor's made a killing. My lantern did nothing to help. I met another member named tooth. hey tooth how did you and your pal make out.

Yes the police are out in force. The place was packed last night and I don't know how many illegally parked cars were towed, but the key word is illegally. Also they were on foot patrol on the bridge. Please don't give the City of Newport any reasons to shut it down. I'm sure that there are plenty of people putting pressure on the political power brokers to do just that. Please don't litter. I've seen the Bay Campus Dock permanently shut down due to litter after warnings were issued by police. Once they shut it down it won't reopen. There are trash cans on the bridge so please use them even if it means picking up after some lazy slob who left a mess behind. We will all be better off if we leave a clean area when the sun comes up and the only evidence of our presence is the ink stained cement.

Good night last night, I got 77 squids from 9PM until 11:20PM. City of Newport just put 2 portable toilets that's the sign of squid season.



So far pink/blue/green are big hits... like johnat mentions, sucks if your line get tangle when they bite hard.

I meet two guys from URI, they will bring the generator in tonight as well.



Please please, before you walk to your car .. just pick up trash along the way.

It sucks to see people throwing trash, leaves the coffee cups, throw beers bottles all over the place.

If 'they' see you pick up their trash, hopefully one of their brain cell will realize that they should keep the place clean.

went last night, fished next to a guy named tom, hello tom, and met a fellow soler, at grimaldi? hey terrence, what a great time, the bite was insane, never seen it like that....i've heard of it being like that, but never seen it myself....filled a bucket up in no time at all...



like sfoxnh said, please pick up your trash, and everyone elses too. i go up with a shaws bag and fill it up with EVERYONES trash. makes me sick to see people leave their trash and think nothing of it. eventually this area will no longer be available to get access to, if we don't keep it clean....REMEMBER ONE SIMPLE RULE, IF IT'S YOUR TRASH TAKE IT WITH YOU. IF IT'S SOMEONE ELSES, TAKE IT WITH YOU IF THEY SEE YOU PICKING UP THEIR TRASH, MAYBE THEY'LL DO THE SAME THE NEXT TIME......

I used to live in Newport, I went to town meeting before about GI fishing issue. Let put it this way, they will close the bridge if they have to. All i ask from everyone is that, Please Please be responsible, clean up after yourself.

I believe the police and community are getting testy...every year more and more people crowd GI...and spawnle is right they will close it if need be. And another thing, it drives me NUTS when out of the blue someone shoulders in between you and friend starting to catch squid without the courtesy of even saying "excuse me" or "please make room", things got worst when his 1st cast tangled my line. This is Ned from New Britain, CT....AKA MoalBoalDiver...



I'll be heading to GI Bridge in RI on Saturday....Plan on getting there early and setting up camp with my wife and son. We also enjoy fishing of the wall, instead of the bridge itself....We bring all our food for cooking on the coleman and chairs and such...We will stay till into the night.



Me, 5'8" heavy build....Wife, is a Filipina, but looks more Chinese to most...Son is 7 and built like a little brick wall....We will all be catching squid as we do every season.....



Hopefully we can meet up.

you guys were doing great catching them even before the bite started. I was with my wife standing to the right of your group. I would love to come tonight but I have to catch up on the 3 hours sleep last night. I am spending the weekend in Misquamicut and will head up to GI Friday night. Will I see you there? If so I will introduce myself. This is my first full season and I wil do what ever I can to help keep the place clean. I would hate to see the bridge closed. Would love to pitch in a few bucks for gas.

Looking at TL's bucket, it reminds me a show calls Bizzare Food with Andrew Zemen. He ate squids baked in their own ink somewhere in Spain and he said it was delicious.........hmmmmmmmmm???????
