Being new to squid fishing , have caught two by luck, Im looking for places around Philip Island to try,
Is it best to fish turn of the tide, run out or run in. Do jigs really make a difference ,
Im using one from KMart $5 and seems to work but maybe Im missing a lot.
Trying Cleeland bight at present.

I was at cowe before christmas and the pier there looked good and I was talking to a local fisherman and he said they catch quite a few there.
get yourself some yo-zuri jigs as they work well.

what about the current or doesn't it matter. Cowes pier is worth a try, saves the long walk at the Bight.

go to san remo pier........
cowes is good at times, but most of the time it isnt, cowes has a huge weed bed, all the squid i have got are following a caught fish up and i just happen to be throwing a jig around at the same time, i know afew guys that fish cowes for squid and they start at san remo on a run in high tide and just as dark falls, has a great light over the weed bed also and lot sof bait fish, then they move onto cowes later in the night.
there is a great spot on the beach on the island but that is for locals only..

Have just started with the squid but trying Clealand bight. walk up toward the old quarry. need to get the tides and times right though.
Do most of my fishing in the western entrance, chasing gummies and snapper or anything that bites.
Rock fish from Berrys. Had some good catches there. 48 cm whiting before Christmas.

its a place that is very well known for beach fishing, had a great reef.
it is going nuts atm with whitting.

I have been told that Red Rocks is OK but never tried there. next time maybe.

i have been to red rocks. i like it but i only ever catch parrot fish <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='  ' />

use a snapper snatcher, or a running sinker rig with a 3/0 black majic circle hook, i use pipi and have alittle squid to keep pipi slidding down, great size whitting and od salmon.
as for squid there, silver whitting under float or use the latest yo zuri jigs that have no sinker and a half paternoska rig

Hi Pat how are you , when shaz and i stayed at you place at wimbledon heights i went fishing at ventnor and you can get squid of the beach with a surf rod using a jig about 4 ft under a float.
works well you just need to use a running float so when your take the rig out of the water the float runs down to the jig and just put a float stop 3/4 or 5ft up the line depending on the depth at the time your fishing and adjust accordingly.
we will have to catch up at some BBQ

Too late in year to get them from beach on the island, only place they are at is san remo pier and out int he bay arrow squid.
as having a hous eon the island im squiding there as much as i can.
Forget the island this time of year, get to port phillip, we got 15 between 2 of us at a special place. many more dropped.

I caught some squid off Cleeland bight thought it would make good bait but the kids ate them.
Mick caught 20 last night out in PP bay.
Im fishing out at the fairway buoy chasing the big snapper and the odd gummy.

Hey guys,
Just read this thread and thought I should contribute.
For around the island, I have noticed these patterns. Cowes produces more during the day than any other pier, but the squid seem to be smaller, around 500 grams in general. San remo produces way bigger ones but not as many, and usually right on sunset and into darkness.
But if you can be bothered, the number 1 spot is red rocks. Not only for whiting, salmon, gumimes snapper, and also 1 massive bust off I had which almost spooled me on 300 meters of 30lb braid, but it is great for big 1.5kg+ squid. The best sucess I have had is with a red shrimphunter with the black spot on its head, fished in the little bays that are created from the protruding rocks. Have seen and caught some massive squid there, only problem is walking back to the carpark with the esky a few kilos heavier <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' />
Not sure about you guys, but I always fish san remo with a paternoster stet up because the tide is always running so strong. If its night time you dont even need to cast out. 90% of the squid we catch are right under the pier!

The one I am talking about is at the eastern entrance of the bay, the old quarry at the end of cleeland bight.
Where is the other one?
