Another sad report
A friend and I fished slack water on Saturday night at Newhaven Pier, following reports we'd heard during the week of 2kg+ squid being caught virtually under the bridge joining San Remo and Newhaven. We fished with Yamashita jigs and garfish, for zilch, so then we put the garfish on hooks and got a couple of draughtboard (swell) sharks, one was about 10kg, both released. The sharks were fun to catch....but they weren't squid!!
All my favorite and (usually) reliable squidding spots like Mordialloc and Middle Brighton have also been depressingly quiet the last month or so.
Fished offshore at the 50m line straight out from western ports eastern entrance.
Using baited jigs with silver whiting i got 10 arrow squid. At one stage i had one squid which was firmly attached to a jig being attacked by another squid,... netted them both

Newhaven jetty
the jetty is located on phillip island just after the bridge turn right and floow that road down. it is almost directly opposite san remo pier. the peir producers trevelly garfish whiting the odd pinkie. although san remo is favoured by myself for squid/calamarii i have seen calamari being caught. there is plenty of space on the pier. and on a strong current alot of snags
2 week old report,... i was fishing the 50m line out from woolami and arrows were THICK. didnt matter what depth you sent a jig down to you were guaranteed to hook up. I even had them taking bait i was fishing right down deep, 50m.

a couple of scuba divers came back in with 2 nice sized crays ~1.5kg and 2 much smaller ones, they also have a nice snapper that would've been ~40cm. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
Spoke with a local and he said the squid boats had been working the offshore grounds very hard and pulling in tens of tons of squid at night <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

You might get red morwong in far eastern victoria, but not around PPB. The closest I have seen them to Victoria is in Jervis Bay, southern NSW. I have seen and speared quite a few banded mowies to 3kg along the west coast of Vic.
And AK...awesome bag of fish mate, but I reckon those fish are jackass morwong, not banded morwong. True banded mowies have many stripes all along the body. There is a fairly large live export market of banded mowies to Japan.
i agree jazz, banded morwong do have distinct stripes but i cant really tell by that pic. is a jackass morwong the same a blue morwong? thats one of the downsides of fishing... when it comes to identification fish are given so many different names that it confuses you. also im going to moggs creek next week <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> (near Lorne) and im just wondering if the surf beach there would be any good to fish? and also if there are any other good fishing/spearfishing spots around there?
I don't think the surf fishing is the best over the warmer months, but you can still catch a salmon or two if you persist. As for fishing/spearfishing, there are many close inshore reefs along this part of the coast, all of them hold fish, so try and find a spot where nobody else is and go for your life. There is a huge patch of reef just to the right of Lorne Pier which looks unreal, but I've never dived it - so that would be a good starting point. Keep an eye out for 30-40cm snapper, there are HEAPS in close around Lorne at the moment. We went cray diving last weekend and saw stacks of them. There are also quite a few crays about, so keep your eyes peeled! I hope the visibility is ok for you, it wasn't too great for us last weekend, but we still found a few crays.
I was out in 50m of water last thursday and managed to get a dozen arrows between us, they were alot smaller than previous trips with the majority having 20~25cm hoods. Tiny compared to the monsters we are used to....
Sammy the seal was out there with his girlfriend and nabbed a number of fish and squid before we had a chance to pull them onboard. water temp was 16.5degrees so she's cooled down quite a bit

We fished for calamari on the inshore reefs of PPB last Saturday, and we caught 1 huge arrow squid, maybe 40cm hood, along with about a dozen small-medium calamari.
