Flinders report - VIC

hi everyone,



i went to flinders today and did not see a single squid get caught! there was heaps of people fishing and catching nothing. i only saw a couple of grass whiting landed. i left flinders around 5pm so perhaps i missed the evening action but in any case, it was not looking very promising <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

Was there any signs of recent action on the peir

Id say too many lines in the water and fishing during the day on such a clear day would of been half the problem to much activity will scare them off also

not really any ink stains on the pier. so i guess its been pretty quiet the last few days. the water was very clear.

greetings all, im a first time poster and looks like ive come to the right place. On wednesday morning im heading down to flinders pier in search of some squid or some big leatheries. As im a shore based fisherman is the pier the only option? When i used to have a boat i used to drift not far from the pier off the near the rocks. is this accessible by foot and if so is it productive for fish?



also im a first time squidder, ive thrown a jig in whilst fishing for whiting and fluked a few but im actually going to target them on wednesday. any tips would be muchly appreciated

Flinders

There is still a good number of squid getting caught off the pier as well as in the bay and surrounding reefs.



While it's not red hot down there at the moment you have to be in it to win it.

Gday Crumpet Avenger! welcome;-)



Theres great info regarding the best tackle and bait to use for Flinders etc if u check thru some old posts, but heres a rough guideline for squid.:



-for the larger squid use baited jigs using eg;silver whiting or pilchard/gar, set under a squid float.

(but if u dont mind risking snags & have plenty of spare metal jigs, u can just cast out a silver whiting on a bait jig and just let it drift about, whilst reeling it in every now and then to entice the squid.) altho id becareful doing this in a strong current and busy pier.



-Its Essential to take a landing net to any pier like flinders, portsea, queenscliff- with a LONG extended handle, or any type of net u can use to reach the water from a high pier.



There is nothing worse than trying to land a surprise 3-4kg monster, only to have it dissappear in front of ure eyes. I adapted a boat landing net with some extra poles & gaffer tape and i put it together when i arrive.



-for squid jigs some of my faves are the YAMASHITA range in size 1.8 gm~ 3.0gm for small to med size squid. best colours seem to be orange/pink.....also blue/green in clearer conditions.



and u cant go past any shrimp imitation type jigs too. they seem to work real well in PPB as well as western port. YOZURI shrimp hunter is a good brand. i guess it pays to have a nice jig collection on hand, so u can see what works on that particular day. lots of brands to try.



others on here will know ALOT more about flinders than i do, so keep an ear out for there reports!



its school holidays now so im guessing flinders will be jam PACKED- so good luck!!

Dropped down for high tide on Saturday with my 4y/o son Jack. Only fished for half an hour, but talked around and found out that only 1 squid was landed all morning, around 2.5kg. Saw one other small squid decked.

Very slow.

My son did love the spot. Watching the divers, chasing gulls and the play area.

Hey Squidy,

The guy's in the boats cleaned up early on Saturday, with plenty over 3kg.

I got a few off the pier in the morning to 1.5kg.

Saw 2 guy's in a tinny clean their catch of squid in the shallows next to the pier. Looked like a bag limit, and 80% over 3kg. The boats were about 1km out to the left from the pier.

When ive been down there, ive fished for squid off the left hand side (if u are facing the very point of the pier.)



if the swell is calm ill stand on the lower platform but otherwise cast from main stretch of the pier. (i can never seem to get a spot off at the very end when the squid r going off...theres always a bunch of very territorial guys claiming that section;-),



but i guess being squid, theyll pop up anywhere around that pier.

FLINDERS

Some great reports of big squid from the Flinders area. Customer John and his mate bagged out on squid with the largest weighing around 3.5kg. They all took silver whiting baits. Dave 'the surf king' fished from the pier to land 3 calamari to 1.5kg on baited jigs and artificials, he also saw squid over 3kg taken.

The end is the more productive spot to fish, but only marginally better than the sides. I've seen big ones come up from most spots past the gate. If I cant squeeze in at the end (which you can do most times with a bit of pitch casting and friendly arguments. it works out eventually) then I'll go either side 10-20 meters from the end.

When the big ones are scarce, it's better to fish from the sides, as you can cast out your floats and then work a jig on the side, which on some day's is much more productive. Very rarely will you get room at the end to cast and retreive.

been trying to collect snapper bait and started gettin couta at mornington over the last few weeks, but havnt seen much ink action yet ths season, so hopefully over the next few weeks ill get onto some nice biggunz from portsea and flinders-& also the cleeland bight area for my first try- lookin forward to reeling in squid whilst standing on the beach;-).

after chasing the landbased reds for the last few weeks, early this morning i decided to finally get back down to flinders pier.



glad i did! watched a beauty of a sunrise and then caught 3 nice squid on big artificial jigs (size 4).

caught the small one on a big blue yozuri, medium size squid on a big burgundy yozuri, and the biggest which still was only a 'teenager' and not a thumper, took a unknown brand japanese brown jig.





surprisingly i didnt hook up on the silverwhiting jigs, but a few other guys landed monsters from all areas of the pier. i noticed a few ppl using yakkas under a float. .



would be great if we could catch yakka/scads here, like at the piers in eden, merimbula etc. such a good bait-dont mind them for eating too, they are really nice dried and salted and then grilled.





saw grass whiting caught for the first time. until the guy told me what they were, i thought they were some type of ling or wrasse.



are grass whiting good to eat or do they taste like luderick? im guessing any whiting would be good for the table.

hi calamarine, thanks for the squid report. did you manage to get any land based reds?



i have heard grass whiting are pretty average in terms of eating quality. though they are a common catch at flinders since the pier is surrounded by favourable grass beds.



you just reminded me it has been ages since i have been up to eden. its a great spot. i particularly like green cape and want to go there again.

Hey Glen,



the last 2-3 weeks, i went on many many dawn/dusk & late night missions to brighton breakwater, sandi breakwater and mornington pier after some enticing reports from friends and family.



one mate caught 3 snapper from 40cm-50cm on freshly caught squid frm the brighton break, so that got me fired up, but i couldnt manage to get there at the right conditions to get anything legal size.



2nd time my mates dad landed a full bag limit from the very end of the brighton break during the previous 'first quarter moon', so the next day i went but got nothing!



3rd time my brother went to sandi break at dusk and saw a couple of ppl fishing right at the beginning of the breakwall, facing the marina side, and in the very shallow water. the lucky guys caught two big reds at least 45cm!! the day b4 was a really strong westerly wind.



after that i found out big snapper will come into very shallow waters right after a big wind. so i guess those ppl were just sitting there at the right time!



so all in all, only caught undersize pinkies and a few missed runs, but as somekind of reward i managed to catch a huge 50cm flatty from the start of the brighton pier. it was the biggest ive ever caught in melbourne so it keeps me going i guess <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />



a mate has promised to take me out on his boat and ive looked into hiring a putt putt so hopefully i'll have a bit more ease at getting some decent sized snapper.

was down at flinders last week, saw a few blokes get some absolute monsters, all caught on fresh whiting. but no one really got more then 1-2 each. I didnt get any, although one did manage to completely rip my yozuri jig almost in half...took off all the fabric from the thing....was a fun nite anyways.

hi guys, i forgot to mention i went to flinders pier on sunday arvo with my uncle and cousin.



we managed to catch quite a few leatherjackets (about 20) during the day. also caught quite a few cowfish (little cute things that you can't eat but are very unique - see pic below). and of course we caught millions of toadfish, plus 2 parrot fish.



we caught 5 squid just on dark.



there was also a few squid about after dark we could see under the lights but they did not seem that keen on the jigs. there was millions of toadfish under the lights and maybe our jigs didn't really stand out in the crowd!
