Flinders report - VIC
Gotta love the big Flinders Calamari. Well done!
Reply
Hey Guys.

Havent been on here for a while. Bought Ive been keeping track of how everything has been going re: SSSQQUUIIDD!!!!!

Went out with a mate at 5am on saturday morning to our favorite hunting grounds down at Flinders. It was belting down the WHOLE way but we thought, what the hell...we may as well have a look.

Got there and stayed in the car for a bit until the weather stopped a little bit and hightailed it to the end and set up camp.

Was out there for roughly 6 hours and picked up 6 thumpers and one more that weighed roughly 2.5kgs. Ill up load a pic when I figure out how. It was stupidly big!!!!

Some just jigging under the pier and most under floats.

Good times.

Flinders is my has been my preferred spot for over a year now. I very rarely come home empty handed. My mate was there last monday during the day and only got 2 but they were a decent size. When the tide is up you can fish pretty much the entire length of the pier from about the second light pole onwards. I have seen calamari brought in right along the whole pier. I have also seen a couple of BIG occys pulled up as well but I think getting one of them would be a pretty lucky day out.

Lots of people use baited jigs suspended under a float. Usually baited with silver whiting or grass whiting caught from the pier. I usually put out a baited jig or two and then flick around some imitation prawn jigs like yamashitas or yozuri's.

Make sure you have a net on a rope or a long squid gaff as it is a long drop to the water most of the time, and the calamari at Flinders tend to be too big to just haul up with your rod. They just fall off.

Hope this helps.

Casey Mason from Think Big Charters reports there are some good calamari about in the Flinders area this week. Coinciding with the run in Port Phillip Bay, these breeders will only hang around for 8 weeks or so. Size 3.0 jigs have been working a treat.

Hey guys,

I had a quick shot at flinders last night. I got there a bit too late and it was pretty dark and then I got a massive tangle. By the time I got a jig in the water I had one squid follow my jig but I had yet another tangle (jig was upside down) and so I had no take. I saw one other guy catch a smallish squid. It was fairly windy and we packed up as no one seemed to be catching.

I noticed they seem to be building a second pier alongside the old one? Anyone have any info on this?

Cheers, Glen

Seems like you were driving around Victoria instead of shopping yesterday Glen. where else did you stopped by besides morning ton and finders?

these past weeks.... the weather is calm with no winds in Melbourne, but when you get out to the beach, its windy. i wasted a night of fishing because of this last week. took my whole family too, was very disappointing. kept thinking the wind will stop but it didn't. and when you arrive back to Melbourne, there's no wind at all.

hey there, we also stopped at Cape Schank which I think is a great place. sort of like the poor man's version of the 12 apostles. we came across a very easy going Echidna that kept eating ants right in front of me. I was only 2 feet away and he/she did not seem at all fussed.

Hi folks, went down to Flinders this morning and fished at first light. Got there just as you could see the first light of the day (5am) and hooked up within 5 mins of being there (nothing huge, around 20cm) on a pink yozuri.... which i then lost in the weed <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Sad' />

Could see quite a few squid hanging around the pier in the lights. Had a decent sized squid charge at the jig just as i retrieved back toward the pier but it didnt want a bar of it when it got close (green yozuri) and nothing else seemed to excite them (even when switching back to a pink jig). Friend i went with caught a cuttlefish that wasnt too bad in size (30cm+). I have no idea on weights for either but we left around 7am satisfied with our 2 hours of fishing.

Went to Flinders 4th Jan. Southerly blowing, all our baited jigs were blowing back onto the jetty as a result so we switched to imitation jigs for a flick.

Fished 5:30am till 10:30am on a run in tide. No action until just after the turn of the tide and then we got 5 in total. No monsters but all a decent size. All were taken on cheap $2 pink jigs. Nothing touched the expensive jigs, even in the same color.

The guy near us was using baits the whole time, always casting them back into position due to the wind. He did not land a thing while we were there, his baits were near where we were casting as well. It is the second time I have been to flinders that imitations have out fished baits.

Cheers,

Gday,

well here we go my first post in the Forum. To be honest I havent caught any Squid yet in VIC (but I hope that is about to change). I've been doing a lot of fishing of the surf in Kilcunda and the San Remo Jetty. I habe been down to Mt. Martha as well do give it a go off the rocks but was never really lucky there. I will try my luck on the Flinders Jetty on Monday. Guess I have to be there early (at first light). Any advise from you guys?

Just got back from Flinders. Got there at 6am this morning and had the whole jetty for myself. No bite on the first rod and the squid jig didnt get anything either. Must have been to windy and the water to mirky.

A.X.L,

I have always had good luck at Flinders. Well, with the exception of two trips to be honest. But 2 failed sessions out of hundreds is not a bad strike rate I reckon. That said, reading others reports, it seems that it does not always produce. As far as tips go, here are mine;'

Get there for first light and have a couple of baited jigs casted out from the end of the jetty as far as you can ( i use surf rods to get distance) when the sun is comming up. That is the insurance policy <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' /> . Keep an eye on them, watch them floats.

If you can fish with a Northerly or Nor'Westerly wind, this will keep your baited jigs from drifting back into the pier. You can forget about the baits for a while. Southerly winds are a pain in the ass.

Then get your fav jigs and flick around. I have seen calamari taken from the 2nd light post at the start of the jetty right along to the end. The biggest calamari in my experence are taken on baited jigs at Flinders. And there are some big f@#kers out there for sure.

The last few times I have been to Flinders, jigs have out fished the baits.

You will need a drop net or a net on a long pole (a painters pole with a net on the end is perfect) it can be a long drop to the water at low tide.

Try to go on a weekday, it reduces the crowds and gives you a better chance of getting a good spot. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />

Read the entire Flinders report section, this will give you a very good idea of others ideas and expereinces.

Post a report when you get back, we all love a good squid report! Big Grin

Hope this helps, good luck.
