a lot of people say at flinders pier in the water there is a (granite piece of rock kind of thing in the water) if this is true can some one get a birds eye view of the pier and show me where it is? thanks

Went to Flinders on Sunday, took my kayak for a flick around the pier. Got zip. But I did see a few getting pulled up from the pier. Fished the incoming tide 11am - 4pm. First time in the yak at Flinders although I do fish from the pier a bit and do ok so was burning when I saw the calamari pulled up from the pier. Saw a few decent whiting and a travelly pulled up as well.
cheers, nala

Quote:Some ripper reports of squid have been caught this week of Flinders Pier with both bait and lures working a treat. Anglers using silver whiting under a float is always a deadly option along with larger sized jigs like the clicks in size 3. Squid over 2kg have been caught with the majority being 800gr-1.5kg. Tackleworld Cranbourne Weekly Fishing Report 7th April 2011â
Another awesome Tackle World report. I love these reports.
At the moment the pier is closed Monday to Friday from about 7am - 4pm for upgrades. I was there last Friday (13th) about 1pm and could not get on to the pier because of the work being done. It was blowing a gale and raining as well. Maybe these 'report submitters' are getting these ripper squid at night, in winter, with crap weather, during the strong wind and gale warnings that have been around all the last couple of weeks. Maybe these late night winter Squidders are calling Tackleworld first thing in the morn to submit a report. And maybe, just maybe they are using Clicks 3.0 etc... then again, maybe not. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> I seriously doubt it. The stores are good, but the reports are rubbish, at least in this case. cheers, nala

I ask nicely for them to move and if they don't I cut there line once at Queenscliff the pier was neally empty caught 5 squid in 20 seconds one after the other and a old guy ran and put his squid pole near my squid pole I told him that the whole pier is empty to move away at least a couple of meters so we don't tangle he ignored me and it tangled so I cut his line with a new yamashita mullet jig!!!!

Hi All,
I'm new to the site and to squid fishing, but thought I might put in a report. I went to Flinders Pier on Saturday after a day chasing whiting on Westernport and was amazed at the size of 2 squid caught on the pier. The tubes must have been around 1metre in length! I arrived around 4pm and they were caught before then. There was also quite a few Leather Jackets in the buckets. Cheers.

There are a few resident seals at Flinders at the moment. Covered in fishing line and tackle, pretty sad to see.
That said i saw 2 of the biggest calamari i have ever seen in Vic landed 2 weeks ago at Flinders. 55 and 61cm hoods, taken on baited spikes using fresh caught grass whiting. The breeders are moving in. Cheers, Al

Which part of the pier do you fish and what size and colour jig works best ?? [/quote] Tonci, Flinders is productive the whole length of the pier but I usually fish from halfway up and from the end. Most of my catches are from that zone. The calamari can be big at Flinders so i use 3.0 and 3.5 jigs, and if i am feeling dirty i will cast out a float with a whiting on a spike. I dislike baits though, so i normally use jigs. Most colors work, but i generally prefer natural colors, golds, silver, and reds. But i dont think color is a major factor when they are hunting. Make sure you use a minimum of 15lb line and a similar leader. The weed will own all your jigs other wise. Last session my pal lost $100 worth of new jigs using 6lb line. If you get snagged take your time getting it out, lots of small jerks work, long heavy pulls will see you donate to the jig grave yard around the pier. Goodluck, nala
