I have seen first hand a punch up at portsea peir. The cops were called and the ###### then split. It was over a fishing spot of course, they reach over you with the ###### polls if your down on the landing and catch even the smallest squid you have ever seen, then before long you have 3 or 4 polls bouncing up and down. Old fellers too. And you see the same people there every week.

All I can say is ######!!!!!!!!!.

Hey its not only the men that get into the fights either, this fight there was an old woman ######, one of the guys called her a bitch and it went on from there.

Havn't heard of any serious fights at Flinders, but it is only a matter of time before someone gets hurt in an argument.

I saw a funny bust up years ago on lorne pier on a hot day with the pier packed with pole fishermen fishing for mullet and salmon. it was pretty much a three way pole smacking festival with guys smacking poles on other poles and each others heads - very funny!

I got in a tiff with two guys whilst rock fishing on the same bit of the coast. The result - all 4 of my tyres slashed! The is some pretty mad @#$@'s out there.

Gday Kevvy, welcome to squidfish!

I was at Flinders pier 2 nights ago, only one guy had one small squid. The water was very dirty. We fished Flinders out of the boat yesterday morning, and it was also very quiet, we only got 4 medium sized squid (approx 1.5kg) in 5 hours. Next week should be better I think, as long as we don't get any more rain.

Hi guys - new to the site and indeed somewhat new to squid fishing (always thought of them as bait which i know is wrong!)



Anyway - has anyone fished Flinders pier recently? I have a week at Flinders next week and was wondering how I might fare?

Ps have you fished flinders before? if not i'll give you some tips



1 fish @ THE end of the pier on the left hand side landing.



2 bring a bloudy warm jacket



3 bring beer



4 a gas light or torch would help



5 landing net a must on low tide!!!!!!!!



6 have fun & some good chicks down the beach

I've launched my 5.4m kingfisher at Flinders with a 4wd but it was a lot of mucking around but definately worth getting away from all the people on the pier. The problem there is the beach is so flat, especially on low tide. You have to practically drown your car to get the boat on and off.

Had a go at Flinders Yesterday. Fished from 4pm to 11.30pm for 3 squid (about 1.5kg, about 1kg, -1kg). Another bloke fishing down the jetty did likewise. Good day not many fishermen at all and plenty of room for a change. According to bloke that left as I arrived the morning shift did'nt even spot a tenticle so I guess I was quite lucky.

i went to flinders on saturday. very few people around. and also very few squid were caught. one guy said he got a little squid. i did not hear of anyone else catching squid.



i was targeting leatherjackets and got quite a few. but you needed to use a very small hook. also i learned that paternoster rigs are best here because they keep your bait above the thick weed on the seabed. there was lots of small fish that would strip your bait in seconds if you did not get a hit from a "non-tiny" fish.

I'm not too familiar with their movements...can u catch squid from flinders/portsea/mornington/mtmartha throught summer? i remeber reading reports of some being caught down at the mt martha rocks after jan-feb...

they are around all year.



however you have a better chance of catching a big one around spawning time in September.

yeah, i miss those days, sept 2004 was my proper intro to fishing for squid in port phillip, always saw big fellas hitting the silver whiting at portsea/flinders ;-) but at least they'll always be around.



can some one tell me if u can catch nice garfish at flinders? i'm yet to try my hand at this...

Calamarine,



I've never seen any gars line caught off Flinders. I've tried once myself without any luck. They are sometimes around in the shallows (1 - 3 feet ) on some nights and some guys have been known to net them on these occasions.

Thanx Mr snapperman, yeh, ive also noticed at portsea, the old regulars usually fish for gars in the shallow part of the pier at the first light post...
