What tide would you recommend for Mt. Martha It seems that calm sunny days work the best. Was going night but started to cool down and rained abit so decided not to go. Will go as when it is a clear day. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' />

Went Mt Martha +mornington+sorrento yesterday/today morning. Didn't see any one fish for squid at Mt Martha but I gave it a go anyway. Nothing came up and was always caught on weeds and stuff, nearly lost a lure. Dont really know how to fish at Mt Martha so decided to move to mornington. Lots of ppl at first but only 1 person caught a squid and he said it wasnt a good day so they all left. At 12am mornington was kinda empty and I didnt get a single squid so I decided to so Sorrento (donno why). There were not many people fishing there but ppl were catching wrasses. Later on around 2am, almost every one was hooking up 1-2 squids then it died down again. I didnt catch any. Around 4am they started getting travelly and etc fish. Aound 5am I decided to give up and try some other time so I left. Car overheated at Frankston around 6am so I went to frankston pier to see what people are catching. people there are hooking up lots of garfish with maggots.

I think I am too inexperienced with squidding as I have never caught a squid in my life.

I was thinking if anyone is going to Mornington/ Mt Martha area in the next few days/ weeks and dont mind a company maybe I could go with them.

Anyway will probably try again tonight, will report tomorrow.

i like the afternoons, when the sun's up, i noticed if there's no sun, they bite less.

i dropped by mt martha this afternoon, the boat traffic was mad, with jetskis playing, needless to say, i didn't get any.

Was quite disappointing as the spot was pretty consistent till today. I'll give it a try again once the festive season dies down.

Went for a fish for squid at the pillers this morning at 6. first cast ended up getting one, pulled it up and squirted ink and just missed me and nearly made me fall down the clift!! straight after that i cast out and got another one this time i was ready for the ink. then the clouds came in and didnt end up getting any for 2 hours so i just packed up. this is my first time catching this after heaps of tries really stoked with it!!!

also i had another rod out just sitting there for fish but no luck i just had a sinker n hook using blue bait for bait but nothing any pointers on how to catch fish there and what sort of fish? what bait? and how should i go bout it?

thanks <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blueboxbullet.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I was there yesterday. i got 5 small squids but 3 were so small i threw them back and i kept 2.

there was a few garfish about which was our main entertainment <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

garfish eh, just floats and small hooks?

what baits? i've got no experience with them at all!

we actually used chicken as bait. i usually use pippies but had run out so i gave chicken a run and it worked just as well <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Fished down at Beaumaris pier for the rising tide the water was dead flat and it was really murky, with heaps of floating weed. put it in the too hard basket and went to Mt. Martha

Fished Hearn Road, got down there just on daylight there was 2 boats within casting distance, drifting for squid.

Started casting a red shrimp yamashita around and got one follower, only a live bait size. Got one a few casts later, and another one on the next cast about twice the size but i dropped him after a few meters.

switched to a angry looking harimitsu jig dark with white stripes, got a one small hit then nothing, cast along the same path a few times and got another one around the same size as the first.

I saw 4 or 5 salmon swimming past so i grabbed my other rod with the metal slice and had a few dozen casts, but i got bupkis.

Went to Mornington pier to have a walk and a ask a few dudes about the squidding. 9 were caught from daylight till 10am that i was told about.

Checked out beaumaris pier again on the way home, probably till low tide. caught another small one on the same Harimitsu jig. Left my lighter in the car, so i packed up and left.

Mt Martha rocks are so healthy looking, acres of broken reef and weed, clear sand patched areas. Heaps of baitfish, small fish, small squid, rays.

I could see there being some monster squid in the deeper sections of the rocks. I think casting into the deep with some size 3 or 3.5 will be a winner, just need to find the holes.

It's nice down there in an easterly.
No problem...

Can do. Right. Uh-huh.

Gotcha. Cat in the furnace.

hey hhliu5 the best way to catch squid is at dusk to evening, you can catch them during the day but its best that u jig for them. use a prawn jig works wonders.

1.BUY the PRAWN JIG (LOL common sense there from any tackle shop.

2. if you're planning to fish during the day try to choose a calm day and choose areas with sandy bottoms and weeds

technique.

cast your line out with the prawn jig on and let it sink to the bottom. once there what you want to do is flick ur rod tip and very slowly wind in your line ( making sure that the jig is just above bottom) this makes the prawn look injured. squids LOVE this <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />

they will attack your jig even if they don't want to. first they will follow the jig for a bit and then you will feel the tug, i don't think i need tell you what you need to do then. just make sure when u are winding in that u keep tension on the line or they might slip off.

i have caught god knows how many squid using this. i've had squid follow the jig to the pier where i just jigged on the spot to make them strike <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' />

anyways good luck with it and you should catch your 1st squid <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' />
