got up at 4.45am this morning , had me coffee...the day doesn't go the same otherwise lol..got my gear together and headed for manly harbour with perfect conditions....no wind and almost high water.

got down there to find the water almost glassed out and only a couple of people fishing on the first corner.

I walked just past them and said howdy and first cast bagged a squid...mmm...this aint bad..second cast I dropped another.

then these people beside me came over for a look and the name Bevan was mentioned...did you say your name was Bevan..yep..he looked at me and said Paul..you got it , it was ck1...well howdy do and all the rest of it.

so it was fish and teach all in one this morning as ck1 couldn't soak up the information fast enough after he watched some squid right at our feet take a jig and I think he was amazed at how you catch them there.

he checked out my jigs , rod , reel and line and I think he was going on a shopping spree for gear hahahaha.....SOME BODY JUST GOT BITTEN BY THE SQUID BUG!!!

mate I'm only too happy to take you fishing and teach you more cause there's plenty more to learn as I found out this morning from a guy fishing on a kyak who told me of a place where he counted 28 squid just sitting behind the weed patch near by so I'm going to check it out.

well I hung around for another hour after ck1 and friends left for breaky and ended up with 8 squid for the morning...I got pulled up short by a phone call from ..she who must be obeyed...I'm cooking scrambled eggs and bacon...when are you coming home....NOW!!!! hahahaha

it was a beautiful morning down at the harbour this morning and tomorrow it suppose to be the same so I think there's a good chance I'll be back down there.

till next time.

up again at 4.45am and had me coffee , grabbed my gear and tossed it in the car and headed down the harbour where I met up with Tony (lody)

at that stage he had seen one squid follow his jig but no takers so we moved along the wall casting our jigs with no luck untill we reached the end of the wall and tony got the attention of a couple of squid so I soon made short work of them and I had 2 in the keg.

things were looking a little grim because by the time we had worked our way along the wall that far we should have seen more squid but we hadn't and I was starting to scratch my head and wonder why?

I found out why later on when I was talking to the yakker...there were bronze whalers cruising the wall and they will eat the squid sure as shyt , so I decided to try one of my good night spots anf just see whats cooking.

first cast I see a hoard of squid roar in after my jig and I'm straight on...so I yell to Tony to get his ass over here and get into them too.

well it was in a matter of 10 minutes we bagged 7 between us and dropped just as many because the squid were not mad grabbing the jigs but just shooting thier shooter tentacles at the tails of the jigs but we soon worked out how to stuff up thier little game of tickle the jig.

they then shot thru and left us....I wonder why hahahahaha..

after that we walked back to the other end of the wall for nothing and then Tony left for home and breakfast and I decided to give it one more round.

so all the way back around to the night spot for nothing and I was walking back when I came asross a scoal of about 6 small to medium squid but they were very shy of the jig as I chased them along the wall with no luck so I stopped and started talking to a guy fishing on his kyak again.

after about 10 minutes of yakking to the yakker the squid passed right in front of me and I thought...why not...cant help myself...just got to give a shot .. and bingo I got one to grab the jig but after that...not a hope...they were jig shocked...I wonder why? hahahaha..I think they were the left overs from the night spot.

anyway I bagged 8 for my effort and Tony got 3 so we got something for our efforts and my weekend tally was 16.. good enough.

till next time inkers

well done Bevan you've opened your squid account.

you should wear some good strong boots down there as the rocks can be dangerous and if your by yourself you can end up in a bit of trouble so get some boots mate.

that first one is about the hardest one to catch and now pay attention to what they do and all the bits should start to fall into place.

GENIUS???? I've been call lots of things before but a GENIUS....bugger me hahahahahahahahhahahahaha

thank you paul, it would of taken me alot longers to catch my first squid if it hadnt' been for you!

yeah, ill have to look into investing in some boots, i was wearing thongs wen i slipped on the rocks n grazed my left leg.

ill pay particular attention now at wat im doin and how the squid react to it, n hopefulli fine tune my technique to increase my "kill rate"! lol

i dont meant to hijack ur thread paul, but juz a quick question.... wat colour are squid wen they die? because i put my in the freezer once i got home and it turned a dark brown... i think it might of still been alive wen i put it in...

ck

sometimes they go brown and other times they stay that clearish colour....beats me cause when my squid go into the freezer they are dead and it still happens.

it may have something to do with ink?? who knows

Well Mug, I finally did the Manly boat harbour gig.

I've been wiring the Redland Bay area and got it sorted reasonably well with 6-8 squid and a couple of decent bream thrown in most nights that I venture out. Thanks to the young guys on Victoria Point Jetty who were kind enough to give me some tips and reassurance about squiding technique.

I sussed Manly out by day then headed back tonight, the one thing I forgot - to heed your words about WIND and squid. There obviously have been some caught across the good nights of the past week (inkings) but tonight was windy as buggery and bitterly cold. Dumbass me for even trying. It was a good learning curve though cause it gave me a good opportunity to suss the various locations out from bottom of tide through top.

My only reassurance was that I was yarning to many of those who were also silly enough to be out , and they hadn't caught any either. I'm busting to give it a go when barometric and weather conditions are more favourable.

Thanks for the very informative posts you have put on this forum. Great stuff.

PS

I was jigging the ramp area when some mean mother fish type critter with TEETH decided my jig was a prawn. A slight nudge and "wham bam thank you mam" and that fish had my $20 Yamashita jig in its guts and gaaawwwn. Oh well at least I know my technique must have immitated prawn behaviour reasonably well - bugger that it was my favourite jig though.

Hi guys just joined and only started squid fishing last week, so far i have got about 4 squids and 2 cuttlefish from blind casting off the Kiosk jetty Big Grin, hopefully will learn some good techniques from you guys.

Where do you guys get Yo-Zuri lures from in Bris? I have only found Yamashita at my local store.

Never done much good off the jetty.

Walk out to the point the other side of the Moreton bay Trailer Boat Club and sometimes you'll see squid or you can just blind cast for them.

Try the boat ramp next to the Trailer Boat club as well.

At night my favorite is to walk along the esplanade from the swimming pool up to the Manly Marina complex and look for squid in the lighted area of the streetlights.

The two hours before the top of the tide is best for this otherwise there isn't enough water.

They can be in a foot of water so don't forget to look right up agianst the rock wall.

If there are no other squidders about I shine a torch in the dark areas between streetlights and look for them.

Don't use a torch if there are other squiders about as they can get a bit touchy about people shining torches on the water.

Good luck.

Thanks for the tips Dr, will try what you recommended this weekend. I think i am developing a itch for eging, spend most day at working thinking about squid and been hitting up on youtube on techniques <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blueboxbullet.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' />
