Manly Harbour, Qld
#61
Met up with R U 12 Mug last night at the harbour for no squid , a couple of walks along the esplanade trying to sight fish some squid and lots of general conversation about squid.

It must have been their night off or they're all over at Peel island with Fish-N-Chippy.

Oh well , next time.

Met R U 12 Mug down at the harbour last night about 9.00pm for a squid bash.

The water was a bit dirty and we had to put sinkers in our pockets to stop getting blown away by the howling north east wind blowing !

Did a couple of laps of the esplanade and the rock wall near the restaurant on the point and saw one good sized squid but couldn't tempt it.

We were sitting at the public boad ramp near the Trailer boat club having a smoke when Mug says there's one !

Damned if I could see it.

Turned out it was right under our feet in about two foot of water.

1 - nil to Mug.

Went for another walk along the esplande and the Guru of Manly boat harbour latches on to the biggest squid I've ever seen caught down there !

It was actually make good runs on the drag each time Mug got it near the net.

After about three runs he managed to net it and put it on the concrete to let it ink out.

This thing had to be at least a kilo squid.

2 - nil to the Guru.

It was close to midnight by the time we got back to the cars so I headed off home.

The guru in typical fisherman fashion said " I might just have one more cast."

He probably caught more after I left.

nah doc , I only stayed for about 5 minutes and buggered off myself but that was a ripper of a squid and had to be a kilo in the shade...bloody big tiger that one and it even went for a second good run after I missed with the net the first time...lucky you didn't get shot by that big sod when I passed it up to you...you would have been black from head to toe...hahahahahaha

they are a bit thin at this time of year but you can still pick up a couple if you persist.

sorry, i know this might have been covered time and time again, but what is needed when squidding at night???

I went to manly 2nite with no luck, however, i only looked on the jetty where the "jetty kiosk" is.... im assuming high tide is the best time???

yep high tide is the best time but at this time of year the water is too dirty...wait till it clears up some and then have a look.

i went again to manly harbour 2nite with no sucess! however, we did manage to see 3 squid in total, but because the water was too murky, we would lose track of where it was then it would kinda just dissappeared... this all happend while high tide was peaking...

those squid in the harbour are very hard to catch if you dont know how to fool them.

went for another shot at manly harbour 2 try and land my first squid, unfortunately, still no luck..... BUT, i actually saw my first scoal of squid 2nite, however, the size of them wasnt that large.... one of them almost took the jig, it followed it right to the point where i took the jig out of the water, then the squid kinda just disappeared.... the hardest part about squidding is actually maintaining visual contact with them... it really is a case of, now you see them, now you dont.... the most frustrating thing after you lose visual contact with them is you have to walk up and down that particular location again until you see them...

ck

I know what you mean but the problem is your jigs are sinking WAY too fast.

they need to almost float to be able to stall and tweek....thats the trick with them and also watch your shadow when your walking along where I KNOW your walking as it spooks them and they will bugger off.

might have to go down for a bash tonight.....then you can kiss them goodbye..hahahahahahahahahaha

went for a look down my favourite haunt this morning at first light to try on some squirters but things were a little grim to start with but after a short while I got a couple of knocks but no hook ups so I wandered along a bit further for bugger all and I was heading back to the car when I thought I would give it one last crack at a spot where it drops into a little deeper water....bingo...a squid...not huge for there but around half a kilo and his mate was hanging around so I couldn't help myself and soon hooked onto it as well but dropped it...BUGGER.

I was starting to think things are looking grim for this year but when I went back over my posts from last year it's early....pphhheeeeeeww...it still hasn't started yet thank phark.

this weekends tides and weather are looking good so far so we may see the start of some catches...here's hoping

Lody...get ready mate...break out your calamari camoflage hahahahaha.
