Newport Ri 2012 Squid Season
#81
I C... I fish mainly the North Rip
#82
Green Hill is West of Pt. Judith. If you don't have Sonar make sure you have a Compass and a Spot light... It can get very Foggy out there. Best bet is to wait till May and follow the Francis Fleet home.
#83
If anyone else has a boat, I'd like to try to get a few boats out there together and do some squidding. I have radar and sonar on my rig - 19' center console. I'm just not familiar with the area and I rather not venture out unless with someone that knows the area especially at night.

fished green hill area on a head boat out of point judith, good learning experience. martinetti jigs are the best bet (small ones). we even caught them on my boat during the day! look foward to getting out there.

I don't know about the reef 2 miles south, but if you look at a chart and find the number 2ns red nun can at nebraska shoals (just off green hill beach), that's where a lot of squid turn up.

I'll usually fish anywhere from nebraska shoals to the beaches just west of the harbor of refuge depending on where I see life.

The head boats almost always seem to park out by the number 2 can.

My boat is in, but I have a week or two of projects before I anchor up at night. I have a full compliment of radar/ap/sonar/ais/underwater lights/etc. If any little ducklings want to follow along, I'd be happy to lead you back into the harbor if gets foggy.

I've done that run at night with the fog so thick I didn't see the lighted markers at the west gap nor did I ever see the breakwall or buoys or anything else until I got to the sluiceway, and then lost vis again coming out the north side until my marina.

Butt puckering stuff.

But worth it for the squidies. Glad to hear they are in.

Haven't heard that yet.... Lot's of Maybe's but? My dragger friends down there say they're not there yet, so.... I think it's all hoping so far.

Sweet....I just got 24 new ones on ebay for 16 bucks. Won't do any good unless there are some squids to use 'em on..... <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/images2.jpg' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Confusedq:' />

Benny's is a chain store you can find all over Rhode Island. They have everything from hardware to housewares, though usually not very high quality or unique. They do have a fishing section though.
