If the weather is ok, I'm heading out tomorrow morning but I think Monday next week might be the best chance.

Just wanted to say "Best of luck" for a great squidding season ahead, to all my friends at GI, RI bride...... I will surely miss seeing you all and sharing those great laughs and times, myself and my family used to share with you all there. Actually, we are now living on the island of Cebu, Philippines. I recently finished having my personal pump boat made for me here, it's a native style boat with outriggers and small 6 hp honda engine. I recently have been adding some extras that one just doesn't see here. Rod holders, night lighting ( both onboard and underwater ) and electronics, not t0 mention "Safety Gear " I'll be sure to post some pics and stories soon, how my night squidding and tuna fishing trips work out for me....

I still think when the cherry blossoms are in bloom in Newport, that the squid are around, that was just a correlation yet to be substantiated, but duly noted. Is there, anybody that can report the blooming of cherry blossoms in Newport?

I looked Thursday.

T-Shirts? I have been throwing this idea around, for a couple of years and haven't had enough interest or orders in the past to make it worthwhile.
I had the concept of what would be the 2012 International Squid Fishing Festival. A graphic with us all lined up every race and creed on the causeway, with a monster squid lurking below and begining to reach up to get even with us. White shirts to show off the actual ink stains as we earn them with room for signatures of our old and new found fishing pals. I don't need to make a profit, I just thought that it would be cool. Anyone have any thoughts about it? I want to use highest quality T-shirts for a lifetime of wear, and a good silk screen. black and white would be cheapest, but if there is enough interest, I can go multi-color, and can probably get it done for around $15-20 would be my estimate, depending if we do both sides. I need to look into it more carefully aftrer the litmus test of interest changes color. Any artists out there that would like to offer a graphic, I suppose we could vote on a design to print. It gives me something to do while awaiting the rising of the squids. I love squid fishing probably more than any other fishing. What a blast! Cheers, DrCiro

It was my understanding that a licence is not needed to take squid although on is needed for salt water fishing. Can anyone chime in as to whether this is true or not? I intend to get a salt water licence just the same, but might hold off a bit. Licence or beer? Beer or licence?

Headed to GI tonight to give it a shot with two other newbie friends. I saw mention of the hurricane barrier here in Providence - anyone else have any luck this far in?
Licenses are needed for finfish, not squid, seeing as how they have no fins. However, it might not be a bad idea to have a SW fishing license just in case you happen to catch a fish while taking you catch of squid. Besides, the fee is reasonable at $7 for the year, and it also would allow you to fish in NY, CT, MA as well as RI.

Last year I had first sight squid on April 29, 2011, the water temperature was 52.9F, it was a crescent moon. One of my buddies got two, we stayed for about 2 hrs and didn't see them come througn anymore.
I've been tracking the water temperature and moon phase because I've been told that these are the factors that determine when squid will come - just like the post about the cherry blossoms - just trying to see which theory is more accurate and maybe I won't have to go down there each night to check if they're in or not. On May 4, 2011, the water temperature was around 53.9f degrees and that's when I started to catch them, I'll probably start checking around 52f degrees water temp., we'll see if this theory will hold true for this year, I will keep you posted.
That is a nice site but seems like it might be a bit cumbersome to navigate after checking it out for just a minute or two. A bit off topic but hopefully no one will mind - I like to go directly to the NOAA bouy data for the locale being fished. For Newport: http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=nwpr1 For Hyannis: http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=44020 And if one really wanted to get a good feel for whats on the horizon for weather these NOAA dopplers cannot be beat. After using them for a few years now I am able to predict changing rain/no rain conditions for my locale very accurately - sometimes in extreamly variable conditions I am able to predict change within 15 -30 minute time horizons. If one has a smartphone this can come in real handy out on the water - especially here in New England.
