Squidding In New England States
Good luck!!!! I will be a very happy man if you post that you grabbed some squid. I don't want it to be over yet!!!

I hope you get em. Wonder if fishin monkey tried Hyanis harbor?
He was going to try or find out the latest for P town. Wish he
would post something already.

Heh... I still couldn't post as of yesterday...

I didn't go to P-town - I called the harbor master and he said you could fish there at the pier till 10pm - but that the squid have left... but tinker macks and snapper blues are there still...

I didn't try Hyannis harbor yet... though I expect it'll be the same story...

No luck guys but I was there at low tide and left well before high.

Is this a 'high-tide' only type of fishery? If not, I'll go see at the Hyannis Harbor tonight and keep you updated.

I just dont want to go at low tide if there are no squid at that time?

I also dont mind checking in Chatham if someone tells me where to go.

I'm fortunate enough to have the time to do all this scouting, I just need to know where to scout.

thanks

Good to see your post FM. SB thanks for the updates, wish it was good
news. Had all week to go but everywhere seems to be reporting the same,
the squid have left, for now. Guess its back to scup and sea bass and
Thursday looks to be a perfect day.

BTW I always seemed to do much better at HI tide, seems 1hr before to 3 hrs after has
always produced best for me. Also if its a clear night the full bright moon seems to
make #'s decrease. I don't know where to go in Chatham. Any dock or pier near deep
water with some light usually does it.

Hey Janz, wondering if you have any no fail spots for sea bass/scup from the shore? Go squid year on the canal overall this year. My frezzer is full and should last me till may. Can't wait until they come in, learnt a ton this past season. I'll post when they are back in the canal. We will clean up.

Sorry for the delay in answering but I have not fished for them from
shore. Find a deep area where the water is not to warm and there is
a rocky bottom you should find scup, sea bass and tautog. Heard of folks
trying at the railroad trestle at the canal. We fished the Ma RI line
and hammered them on Thursday. If you liked scup you will love
black sea bass.

Just got a report from a buddy who nailed 25 squid in Edgartown at 11AM two days ago. Anybody hear any other Vinyard reports or Woods Hole reports?? I'll be in Menemsha for a month starting Sept. 2 or 3, will post any action I find. We usually get some hot squid action on the Island in October.

Ahhhh Menemsha... I learned to catch squid there in the mid '70s as a teenager. We used, what I now call the Menemsha Jig, the painted white wooden dowel with the treble hook. They sold for a buck at Curly's Texaco. I was a deckhand on my fathers fishing boat "San Domenico II" during the summers then. Me & my buddy Chris would stay up most of the night, every night we were there filling buckets with ease... The following day we'd sell the squid to Pooles for twenty cents a pound...enough to get a couple'a kraut dogs each behind the post office...damn, I can't remember the name of that place!! What memories... Thanks for mentioning Menemsha... One of my favorite places...

Hey guys check this out...

"Mike from M and D’s in Wareham is optimistic about this weekend’s tides, starting Sunday. Mike also said there were some enormous squid in the Canal, some with tubes as long as a man’s forearm."

Wonder if they're catchable... and where they were seeing these...

Too bad I left my squid jigs and lights at home... maybe I'll go buy some and try tomorrow night anyway...

Anthony, as far as a good spot for scup, I've always had very good luck on the east side of the railroad bridge (both sides of the canal)... I caught a bunch last week... didn't try this week yet... but might this weekend... I wouldn't be surprised if they were still there...

Looks like its hit or miss mostly miss anywhere you go for squid.
Scup and black bass has been excellent. Still same story in RI
for squid none.

Went to canal tonight. Report was true, very large squid. Talked to a few guys down there said the squid fishing had been great in the canal. They also said don't go on the week of the full moon, it draws the squid out of the canal. That's why we didn't see any 2 weeks ago. I'll post pics of my catch. I was there 1 hour before to 2 hrs after high tide.

Thanks. Also thanks for posting that report, I thought they were done. They were very hard to catch last night though.... Got spooked very easily, even jolting the jig too fast would end them away some times. I was catching them with orange and no weight, just letting it hit the water and slowly sink down. They were taking it on the way down once the jig was out of sight.

Almost packed up the car and went but then I figured if I was there
the squid would not. So I stayed home so all could have a better
chance.
