Lorne - Vic
#1
Howdy,

Fished lorne pier, half way down, on sunday afternoon. we caught 4 calamari, 2 were good size. Orange and green jigs worked the best. also caught 6 leatherjackets whilst we waited for the calamari to come and play <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' />

Thanks AK,

Were you fishing jigs under floats or were you casting and retrieving the jigs?

I have never fished at the Lorne Pier but I have seen plenty of ink stains on the jetty.

Welcome to the new chat board. :i :i

hi glen,

well done with your efforts with regards to squidfish <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' />

we had the squid jigs under floats and just jiggled them every now and then. i tried the cast retrieve method but nothing was happening. If the end of the pier is overcrowded i just fish the middle section which is usually quiet and has its fair share of squid and leatherjackets.

Hello,

well we fished Lorne on sat. 5/7/03 from about 1000 to 1630 for 2 leatherjackets and dropped a really nice calamari about 1kg mid air as i was about to haul him onto the pier <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' />

i had a small salmon out as live bait and reeled him in at one stage to find a suspicious chunk missing from his side a few lacerations,... i suspected calamari so i threw out a silver whiting baited jig and presto! the jig had just hit the water when the float when under and i was onto a good one <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' />

i was sooo disappointed when i had him with half a metre of the pier and he dropped,.... BUGGER!

all in all 3 fish were caught all that time we were on the pier and 2 of them were ours.

fishing a squid jig under a float is just like bait fishing with a float BUT you just replace your hook with a jig! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />

float fishing for squid can be a good way to "test the waters" while targeting other fish. if you start catching squid you might change over to the cast and retrieve method which is perhaps slightly more productive and provides better hook up rates.

thanks glen, i didnt know it was that easy! does it actually work much? also, what type of float do you use?

i often use half a wine cork.

though that would not work for a BIG jig...in that case, you might need a whole wine cork as a float! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

how do you attach the cork to the line? also, what is a baited jig? is it just a normal jig that you put bait on or is it a piece of metal with squid barbs on the end that you thread a fish onto?

sorry bout all the questions, im kinda new to squidding...

thanks again glen,

you just need a sharp knife to cut a slit half way thru the cork from top to bottom.

Then you can just wrap the line 3 or 4 times thru the slit. It is quite secure. I very rarely lose a float. And if i did lose one then...well it cost me nothing... so i would not care! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

by "baited jig" we normally mean a metal skewer with an umbrella hook at the end that you slide a whole fish onto.

cheers, glen

Spent a couple of days down at Moggs Creek last week and thought I would try the Lorne pier. To my suprise it was closed as it being rebuilt. I think it is still some way off being finished. (at least 6 months).

Hopefully my feeble contribution might start some VIC reports coming in as someone has to be wetting a line.

Hahahaha, yep, it sure was closed.

And now they is 4 million lights on it.... But the same old place still produces the squid <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Usually have good luck at Lorne but didn't catch any squid there on the weekend. I think it was cause we fished as the tide was going out, hopefully better luck next time <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Sad' />

When the Squid Boats turn up <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

I'd say in a couple of months mate, although you will find them on the calmer nights now, just a lot slower going thats all.

Beautiful conditions last night and this morning.... Did some Squiding with some brand new jigs i had (Yo-zuri and a Yama).

Nothing at all... plus a strong NE wind was getting up and making strong currents in the water, was hard to slow the jig down.

A local Pro Crayfisherman was telling me they are still catching thumping squid at Portarlington, as they do this time of year.

Another local whom works at the Lorne Co-Op has also been going there for some big squid.
