Well, it took it's time, but the squid have turned up and so has everything else in the food chain.
Not sure about Lorne Jetty, but the squid have turned up out wide. So have the Couta and Mutton Birds and no doubt what ever little krill and bait fish go along with it... oh, so have the Snapper.
No reason why squid won't be found off the jetty now and in the coming weeks.

Thats good news mate, i went to lorne last year for a drive down the ocean road for the first time, was magnificent, had a look at the pier, its a long way down!
plenty of squid were being caugt so i think i will take the gear down for a weekend soon

Yep, plenty of "Day Light Saving Time" for a squid fish after work now.
There used to be a group of us last year, and i can see it happening again,
In fact tonight would be perfect, ocean is flat as a tack.

how do the squid go when its calm down there, i know its different fishing the ocean, but me and my mate have fished the same spot ( in the bay) every tuesday all year every week, and every time its glassed out we have a hell of a time catching decent squid

Yes, you are probably right... but its just nice to be there in those conditions.
I have found, when the squid are on, they're on... calm or not, but like most all fishing, i little wind on the water is always good.

Was 22 degrees at 4am this morning here, with a min of 19 predicted for tonight.... you're not going to get better squid fishing conditions than that <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' />

Well considering when the tide is low, the water doesn't start till 1/3 the way up the pier, i suggest an hour or 2 either side of high tide
High tide morning and evening even better
High tide morning and evening 4 days off a full moon, perhaps better again

Went out today, SQUID EVERYWHERE!!!
Couldn't even get baits to the bottom the squid were that thick!
They completely filled the sounder with colour when the schools went under us.
Catching them on a Pink Yozuri 2.0 jig, on single hooks with biat, on surface baits on anything really.
Best thing this time is we tried the cleaning them in the catch bag idea behind the boat.... That is the best idea EVER!!!
Just tossed them in whole and drove off, bag bouncing in the wash for 5 minutes.
Pulled them in and all heads were removed from bodies, all skin was removed (legs, bodies,skin inside and out and ink sacks all gone) not to mention they are now all so tender and white!!!!
Such a great idea... i'll never do it any other way again. Mainly because i'm lazy <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' />

Yeah, been there for weeks now.
We were in 40m of water and over some rubble and reef.
Basically they are everywhere! But some structure is going to make them hang, so just look for that and you should have a more productive time.
The squid were schooling at the 20 to 30m mark in the water table.
I wanted to try a bait jig last trip also, but the squid were that thick, i didn't even get time to rig it.
Next trip i am going to run 3 jigs on one rod to save a bit of time.
Wonder what the boys will think if build "The Bat Jig"

That sounds sensational, so thick you could not get your bait to the bottom? Man, awesome. What size were the squid? How far out do you need to go, can you get there in a tinny?

Hey, yes you can.
But its not really a Lorne thing by any means, from South Australia to PPB the whole coast is littered with squid this time of year.
It is the very reason why so many other species also turn up.
Yes indeed you are right, so thick you can't get baits to the bottom, people around here hate them, consider them pests, because they are chasing Snapper or Gummy. I know for a fact they move when the squid move in, because it piss's them off so much.
Nothing new though, they have been there for years and years.... all part of aqua culture and cycles.
Launch your tiny, scoot out to about 30 or 40m and drop your jigs down.
This time of year, i can't even get a second rod out (or even ready) before the first one bends over.
Size? Just school size i guess, some bigger, some smaller... no record breakers, just lots of them.

If your boat is "Beach Launchable", you can launch anywhere you can get your 4WD down.
Otherwise there are ramps at Apollo Bay, infact, you can get squid in the Apollo Bay marina.
If you have not beached launched or don't have the right equipment to do so, i'd suggest Apollo Bay, cos as much i love seeing $225,000 Porsche Cayenne's bogged with waves coming through the rear tailgate (happend early this year) ..... I'd suggest against it if you like your car and would rather not suffer such public humiliation.
BTW, i just tried my 3 Squid Jig rig, on the first drop the second it hit the bottom... BANG... only this time it was 2 fish that jumped on.
I might make some swinging hook jigs out of some old squid jig now (like a knife jig).

Another bag of squid caught using the above methods today.
And also cleaned using the bouncing bag method.
Today there was a few Calamari mixed in with the ever present Arrow Squid.
Cooked the Calamari up tonight... OMG, people are sooo right, the difference is amazing. So tender

Clearly enough people read these posts.
