razorback jigs

hello,



can anyone tell me if razorback jigs are good to use? i was thinking of adding some spikes to my old jigs to make them more like razor backs.

would this be advisable?

From my experience - it just increases the amount of snags and the squid are always hooked on the back row of hooks anyway.

hey guys



on the weekend i went down to phillip island and decided to brave the cold weather and go squidding on the san remo jetty. i didn;t bring any gear up so had to borrow my gf's dads stuff. i used his razorback green jigs size 2.5



skip 2 hours and i had 4 decent sized calamari. 2 of which were caught on jags in the middle of these jigs. i was once sceptical about using these jigs but i must say they worked for me

Well done pat, you deserve to get some squid if you put up with the freezing weekend weather!

I am also skeptical about razorbacks, having never caught on one, but it seems like they do work....

lol ye jaz but when you wearing, 3 pairs of pants 2 jumpers and a jacket a balaclava and a beanie then you dont really feel the cold

normally i just use my $1 jigs i bought of ebay they seem to do the trick for me but i didn't have em with me. i wouldn;t go saying that razorbacks are the way to go but i do think that the jags on the back of the jig help with the hook up on the calamarii/squid

Those 2 squid were probably all the evidence of any success the Razorback makers ever had. At least that I recognise. Fact remains that 50% of my squid catches are visual affairs, and NOT ONCE did they grab the middle. They always came from behind <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

my experience has been different to hunter killer. i often see squid attack from the side of the jig.



however this fact does not automatically mean razorbacks are a good idea. there is an argument that the squid feel the centre barbs and then get a fright and let go straight away.

Im sorry - im hooked on them. Dont use anything but razorbacks. Ive had a number of squid come up connected only to the ones in the middle, and my dad even hooked a squid of which he only brought up a tentacle - connected to the middle barbs.........

I guess its back to the same old argument again... well everybody has their tastes. Just that from my experiences using the Razorback I wouldnt touch it with a 10 foot pole. Not necessarily for the middle barbs, but for the fact that I was shocked by the attrocious build quality. Everything from the cloth to the barbs' spine(that fell out for no reason) ensures that Id prefer a $2 K Mart jig over this. Also, maybe Sydney squid are more cautious and attack only from behind? <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blueboxbullet.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

My experience is very similar to Glen, >90% of the squid i have actually SEEN attack the jig grab it from the side, wrap their tentacles around it, and it seems that when they let go or 'slide off' the jig they actually get hooked.

I had an orange razorback and it fell off my line right before my eyes into the water never to be seen again. It seems that the line had been weakend from all the snags i got

Hey Illa, welcome to Squidfish!

I'd guess that with those extra hooks razorback jigs are more prone to snagging than conventional jigs.

Finally got my login working.



I got so annoyed when it fell off i didnt even get to catch a squid. I have caught many on my other little $4 jig though but i think the baited jigs would be more productive.

ahaha my girlfriends cuzin had just bought a brand new ornage 3.5 razorback jigs first cast see's the jig float to the bottom of the san remo jetty ahahahah sorry but i had to laugh at him cos about a hour earlier he was telling me how good his jigs were compared to my $1 ebay ones <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

Well this one was also orange i think it was 4g but my blue one does well.
