Colman Brand Jig Success In Oz

Got this email from a customer this last week. Fishing in some place "Moonta South Oz"???? I'm not too good on locations in Australia. I don't have ALL the tiny details, but sounds HOT!!!! That's what fishing is supposed to be about.... showing up the other guys, and walking away with a BIG grin!!!!!

jon - i haven't heard of moonta before. i just looked it up on the web and found the following map -

moonta is on the yorke penisula. its well known for squid fishing.



to be honest i think the type of jig you use is not so important in South Australia. your customer probably just had good technique and was surrounded by beginners. of all the reports i have heard of people bagging out while others catch nothing around them (and i have not heard that many in the 4 years i have run this site), it has always been an experienced jigger who knows his/her stuff. the colman jigs are not much different to the other jigs sold here in australia. e.g. yamashita, yo-zuri etc.



on the topic of durability. have you tested how long your jigs last before they start to show signs of corrosion? i have never seen this sort of information from a jig maker before. only anecedotal experience from the jigs i have owned myself.

It wasn't the standard type of jig that they did good on. He said they caught a couple on the "typical japanese style jig" the ones I'm selling, most on the other non-typical ones. Said he did best on the Puget Sound Squid Teasers, I had thrown a few of those in with his order just to try out. I gave him a Silver Mylar, Gold Mylar, and Pink Braided. He said those worked well, as well as the underwater lights with the hooks.



Can't say that I've done testing on the durability part. All parts are quality stainless steel, so I wouldn't expect any corrosion problems.

ah ok thanks for that extra info. was your customer using the teasers under floats? jig up and down? or cast and retrieve? cheers, glen

He said they were initially casting and retrieving, but then used floats due to seaweed problems.
