No I'm not a local, but I have a friend who lives in Ocean Grove and have recently been out with him a couple of times.



We went out early this morning between 5.00 and 9.30 for 15 calamari (quite a few small but also some large as well), one arrow squid and my first cuttle fish. They were a bit patchy but I can't complain with that amount. Some of the better bites occured on the drift right as I was approaching the beach. A couple of times we had to quickly haul in a couple of squid and get the boat out of there B4 it beached itself. Good fun though.



I could'nt help wondering how the guy's out deep were doing as this was where most of the boats were. John, if your reading this, were you out there this morning in the deeper water and getting a few?

I was one of the boats out deeper as was John. there were some good sized ones being caught but alas i didnt do too well, my father-in-law only got one which was caught on the very tip of it tenticle,.. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':unsure:' />



i was using silverwhitting and it kept getting demolished but no hook up. i tried rigging with the head towards the barbs and the head away from the barbs with the same result, just a head and tail were left on the jig <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':angry:' />



my father-in-law got seasick pretty quick in the lumpy conditions so we headed back to the ramp where i tied off to the jetty on the right before the bride and moored boats and caught some good trevally 4@35~37cm, 2 leatherjackets and a couple of mullet.



my boat hasnt got a name yet, its a carribean concorde 1990 model with a predominantly white hull with a blue thick stripe running down the side, blue bimni cover, and an old white Johnson 140HP on the back.



i kept a lookout for you but no luck.

I'm hoping to be out on the water at Queenscliff late Monday afternoon and early Tuesday morning looking for squid. Will you be out? I'll keep an eye out.

Hi Simon,



I fished Monday from 0900-1400. started off drifting in amongst the "pack" and managed only 2 calamari, 1@2kg 1@1.5kg, after a couple of hours i had had enough and moved towards Point Lonsdale in 7m of water with a reefy bottom, and started a burley trail.



We caught 6 pike to 50cm, 4 BIG leatherjackets, heaps of small wrasse (released)and 3 big BIG bluethroat wrasse (filleted and released into the fridge for eating) <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':angry:' />



It was a great session and after we ran out of bait we headed home.



I saw John out there and his clients were pulling in a few good sized calamari, AGAIN! his boat must ooze honey or something <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':unsure:' />

Fished queenscliff on Saturday. Drifted b/n the pilot jetty and queenscliff pier. Only caught one small calamari on a green jig. didnt see any of the other boats drifting catch any...

Hi folks,

Im only 12 years of age and i need some informatiom!!!

On boxing day we went fishing at Pt.Lonsdale We arrived at aound 6:30.

I didn't have no luck besides a small octopus, so my father and I decided to go Qeenscliff Pier. We saw a few guys catching sqiud so we decided to stay there for a little. As i kept casting out and casting out i did not get one.So we put our rods in the car and went for a walk to see the ferry.But i wasn't looking at the ferry i was looking and the 3kg treavelly in the buckets. So we got our fishing rods again and went there.We put the rod in and used the octopus we catched earlier as bait not one bight as the guy with treavelly in his bucket said "mate with this current you are not going to catch 1 unless u have a lure" then he told us a good place to go were there isn't no current. We went to this place and we saw snapper in buckets and treavelly in buckets. We tried there and I was getting bights like there is no tommrow but I couldn't hook them. so as time went bye i was still getting the bights. ps: as we were walking back to the car a guy had around 15 squid so we tried and guess wat happend. WE DIDNT CATCH 1

Hi Danny,



How were you trying to catch the squid? Did you use squid jigs? You can't really catch them on normal fishing hooks. Here is a picture of some squid jigs. I like yamashita jigs (the pink one).

Yes Im back been offline due to technical probs



Well what can I say, I fished Queenscliff last thursday and bagged out.

Now this might seem strange to some of you but everyone else fishing caught maybe one or two and the peir was all but abandoned by 11pm whilst I was still bringing them in.

I hooked them left right and centre losing as many as I caught and throwing the small ones back, there were people next to me who fish all day and didnt get a single bite and asked me what I was doing.

Well for those fustrated anglers out there who are fishing Queenscliff and not getting anything heres the secret

With the seal now making a permanent home at the pier people are complaining he is scaring the squid away, well almost because everytime they came into the light whammo Mr seal cleaned up every single squid that came into the light

so the secret here is to cast out to the dark areas of the peir BUT you have to be quick when realing them in as Mr seal has a tendency to steal them of the jig.

Another thing I observed was those not getting a bite where using yo zuris or similar lures and my suggestion is to use lures only when you cant get fresh bait

I was the only one using salted pilchards and I was the only angler on the pier who bagged out, Luck some may say but I say loose the lures because they just dont cut it and that squid will only strike lures when their hungry and aggressive

I could have kept catching them right through the night but had my bag limit and left much to the dismay of the anglers left on the peir.

Now I know Im going to get different responses to this but throw away your lures and use bait. I have tested this theory many times now and it proved it self again when on this particular night I started to fish with lures to no avail and then changed to baited jigs and got results in an instant, remeber that lures are mostly brought and sold for their bright colours and not for the way they catch fish just ask any pro and he will agree.

Oh weather was 15 sw high tide was smack bang on middnight oh yeah chuck out a line for whiting while your at it I hear there plenty around this area at the moment. Going out again tonight report back shortly

small jigs are good in areas where there is a lot of people fishing. i reckon the squid start getting fussy and small jigs then win!



in other areas it does not seem to matter so much. i generally use size 2 jigs.

one thing I forgot to mention in my last report was, if their are no sealice around and the squid are about dont be shy to let your baited jig just sit on the bottom

Good if their a bit on the fussy side

Im Danny, its seems like you know alot about squid and i need information...

On the 24 of january when the tide was out my dad and i went on the rocks for squid. I used salted pilched on a squid jig but it keeps coming off. How can i solve this promlem to leave it on.

Hi Danny



The answer to your problem is to wind some fishing line or cotton along the bait after you have slip it on to the jig

First start off by threading the line through the eye of the jig winding it down the body on a 45 degree angle till you get to the end and then back to the head.

what you should end up with is a criss cross pattern running along the bait you then tie the end of the line back through the eye of the jig.

The best thing to use is cotton ( red if you got it) as fishing line often cuts into the bait making a mess if your pillies are a bit soft.

I have found that some salted pilchards stay firm on the jig thus avoiding the need to tie the bait on.

my name is Simon and yestrday morning i headed off at geelong to fish of the rocks near the boat ramp. i got there 7:30 and stayed there till 3:30 and i got 15 pinkies. I got ten in the morning and 5 in the afternoon i also got 2 big whiting.
