Queenscliff report - VIC
#1
Hi everyone

Fished Queenscliff peir ( landing area) Monday night ( 3/3/03) from 8.30pm to 3 am High tide was approx 2am

Wind was southerly at 15 to 20 knots with stronger squalls

Bagged 6 squid on the rising tide on blue pink and green KOKODA lures

Not many squid about but those that where attacked anything that was put infront of them , few were lost due to bad hookup.

Id would say several more could have been caught if not for the strong winds, of the other three anglers on the peir only one managed to get 3 squid

this area is well worth another trip when winds calm

gooding squidding till next time

P.s to Glen. Great site well done bravo encore lol <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blueboxbullet.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blueboxbullet.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Sad' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blueboxbullet.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Sad' />

HI Opssy,

Check-out Melways map 236 ( maybe outdated as mine is ~10 years old)

Everyone else;

Check out the report on 2 march of the 9kg cuttle fish. see link;

Yeah Queenscliff Victoria!

Queenscliff is one of the more well known squid spots in Victoria.

This 50metre cliff you mentioed sounds interesting! You would probably need a very long rod and lots of line on your reel!

Perhaps best to give it a miss,

Ok guys here we go

Fished queenscliff and St leonards pier thursday night both piers where very very quite and unfortunatly all that was caught was a few very small squid although i did lose two nice sized ones at Queenscliff no one else had much to show. Their was one elderly gentleman next to me who managed to hook into a huge cuttlefish but lost it four times till the fish gave up as so nearly did the guys fishing pole as it started to give a cracking sound as the cuttlefish pull he and his son nearly got it into a net and it was huge, he told me he got one around the four kilo mark last week, he was using a sand whiting on a big wire jig these are bigger than the standard jig and I did try to entice the cuttlefish to my blue lure it swam straight for the baited jig every time he told me that this was the best way and that for some reason cuttlefish dont take lures often

( little bugger just kept coming back at that whiting which by now was a total mess) But apart from that the night was calm quite and the water was crystal clear

It was reported on another site that the squid where good on st leonards pier so I decided to take a look since Queenscliff seem quite and took advantage of the tide differences between the two.

Well I got to St Leonards and looked for all the fresh squid marks and while their where a few fresh ones, to say that the fishing was good was a tad overstated <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rolleyes' /> the locals said It had been very quite and that the reports where a bit over the top makes you wonder who to beleive these days dont it

Some times I think that the pro reporters just make up reports so their buddies in the local tackle shops make money Its not the first time I have found professional reports from pro fisherman to be a load of squid droppings lol.

I've been squiding at the St.Leonards pier over the past week including that Thursday night and have picked up no squid whatsoever and this pretty much seems to be the same for all those chasing the squid down there. So for someone to be suggesting that its been good? - well you do have to question the motive behind that. According to several people I spoke to its never been worse.

Anyway I live in hope

Happy Squiding to all <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blueboxbullet.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rolleyes' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blueboxbullet.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rolleyes' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blueboxbullet.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rolleyes' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blueboxbullet.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />

Supersquid,

i have caught 6 cuttlefish in one frantic session in 14ft of water around mornington on an orange razorback lure. so they do take lures,... i think yours must've really liked the taste of silver whiting <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rolleyes' />

on the issue of pro reports,... i have stopped paying too much attention after hearing some down out lies on radio.

i believe the reports i read here though <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rolleyes' />

On the topic of fishing reports, I have noticed it has happened to me a few times where i have a good catch one week and the next week i get nothing. And the weather etc, was not much different. Perhaps squid get bored and like a change of scenery now and then?

Can be a bit frustrating.

Cheers,

Hi all,

I hear bag limits of squid have been taken at St Leonard’s and Queenscliff using Yo–Zuri jigs in pink and green.

howdy,

i fished queenscliffe on sunday and caught no calamari. we had one follow by a calamari which would've been close to 1kg but that was it. we tried between the pilot jetty and the pier, then in the lonsdale bight but nothing. we ended up anchoring for a little near the moored boats before you go under the bridge for the ramp and caught a trevally about 35cm and a leatherjacket.

A bit dissapointed on with the calamari though. we tried all colours and even baited jigs to no avail.

Hi all

I fished Queenscliff peir 16/6/03 and caught 5 BIG squid (all spawners) on red colored lures the peir was just about desserted with only three people including myself fishing, not much happned till one of the other anglers said that he had done well over the last few weeks and used mainly red lures, I started to fish with green and pink lures but changed to red when the guy told me he bagged out using red lures and sure enough as soon as I changed color I started getting bites. The wind was west to south west with high tide about 2.am with most squid caught around middnight in the dark areas of the peir none were caught with in distance of the lights other anglers managed two or three each, I found it unusaual that these squid were big fat spawners that dont usaually show up till September and normaly these squid travel in big numbers so recent reports I have gathered on Queenscliff seem on the ball and its has been suggested that most peirs are fishing very well for squid in the last week

The water was very clean but not many squid around this time but prospects for the next trip are looking very good I suggest fishing this area in the next week as the full moon is on the wane

I have seen a few reports suggesting that Squid are being caught at Queenscliff and I thought I might have a try on Sunday morning. Is anyone else doing the same?

I've only ever caught two Squid, one on a livebait intended for Kingfish at Merimbula one night, and the other was when I tried about five years ago at Queenscliff. Others that were there at the time got quite a few, but I only got one. If someone more experienced was able to give me a few tips and hints it would help :-)

I have one artificial prawn type jig (green) and one of the metal spike type that you put a Pilchard on.

I really need to get some fresh Squid both to eat and as bait for my Mulloway expeditions.

PS.

I finally signed up after visiting here and occasionally posting as guest (PW) for about six months. It's a great site and looks good too, love the little yellow Squid icon thing :-) One of my favourite cartoons as a kid was "Squidly Didley"

Well there were no Squid around on Sunday morning. One fellow I spoke to suggested that the three-legged monster that has appeared out between the main pier and the Pilots jetty has lights and the Squid are atrracted to it and don't come to the pier. I'm not sure what this raised platform thing is or why it has appeared there, but it is the same thing I saw earlier in the week in Corio Quay going up high in the air on its legs with a few people looking oveer the side.

It is like a mini oil rig and looks to have a drill thing in the middle of it.
