Hi everyone heading down to apollo bay this weekend, just wondering if theres anything biting at this time of year?



Not sure if i can be bothered towing the boat! peoples thoughts on what fishn is like there.?

I was in A.B. on the w/e of 27/28 Aug and had a few mixed results. Caught a couple of small squid in harbour first evening, with several other very shy small ones about. Next morning tried for a couple of hours for KGW and sweep off rocks for no result. Hit the Surf late arvo for Salmon using squid and whitebait for only one med salmon. Heaps of people fishing the surf and only few small ones being taken.

Some great fishing the next day. Spinning off Wild dog using light outfit and 50g yellow and silver laser lure caught 8 salmon around 1kg and less, with one big one lost that broke me off. Great fishing with 6 fish caught with consecutive casts!

A tip if you are fishing Wild dog, try about 150 meters east of main carpack where the channel is turning out to sea.

I was thinking of drifting for a night fish off Altona, and was wondering if anyone had any advice about what rigs to use and what I might expect to catch: squid, gummies, snapper..etc. and what bait.

Hey Mike,

In my opinion, if you're going to do a night session, rather than drifting, I would sound up a channel or reef edge, anchor up and berley, berley, berley. Fish a few big baits out the back for a snapper or gummy (silver whiting, fish heads for snapper or squid heads/strips for gummies), and fish a smaller bait close to the berley source for whatever might wander up the trail (trevally, whiting, flathead). And pop out a squid jig if you have a spare rod......if you were able to catch a small squid then put it straight back out as a bait, you could catch anything <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

I knew y'd have an idea or two. Also I checked out A-mart all sports Highpoint yesterday; very limited range.



I think your gear alone is 20 times what they had; pretty much a couple of tired old rods.



But BigW had an impressive range!

I'm very suprised that the Amart you checked out at Knifepoint-I mean Highpoint didn't have a good range of fishing gear. The one on Nepean Highway in Mentone is absolutely chockers with all manner of fishing gear, including a very good range of soft plastics, particularly GULPs <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' />



Big W is always good value but sometimes the range is very brand specific. If you're wanting a few hard-bodied minnows for trolling that dive to about 2.5-3m, BigW have Berkley Frenzy lures for around $5-6, that have been slaying them around the shallow reefy areas where we fish. Pinkies, snook, pike, salmon and flathead have all fallen for these great (and seriously cheap) lures in the past month. Very interesting when you consider that they have been catching many more fish than the $15-20 hard bodies we mostly use <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':woot:' />



It's still very hard to catch a fish mate, not sure what's going on lately. We spent about 5 hours off Ricketts again on Saturday for a very modest haul, although I did catch my first ever snotty trevalla on a SP, and a big garfish <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Maybe I need to start fishing at night <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

I think my wording was a bit misleading - I caught the snotty on SP, but I caught the garfish on bait. HOWEVER I do aim to catch a garfish on SP before I leave for Canberra - I recently bought some 1 inch nymph-imitation soft plastics and tiny jigheads which I think will work <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':woot:' />

That's strange, according to all reports and what I have seen at the ramps, anglers at Altona have been doing well.



My schedule is packed solid until late december, but after that I would love to get back into it.

If you are going to give a nightfish a go out from altona i'd suggest trying the reef edges between cardinal marker 2km straight out from ramp and the williamstown footy ground. sound the reef, anchor yourself accordingly and good luck <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />
