Who's fishing for squid in Victoria, where abouts, and what are you catching?
I got 7 small calamari off Aspendale in Port Philip Bay on Sunday. I was slowly drifting in about 10 metres, and got them all on green and orange yamashita 2.0s. There are fairly extensive areas of weed and light reef 0.5-1.5km off Aspendale (therefore only accessible by boat). You can usually pick up a few squid during the day, but best times are first and last light. This area really fires during the easter period, I bagged out on three consecutive days over the easter long weekend. The squid are not huge, but are quite numerous. Small jigs are the best, size 2.0 in green being my favorite. I usually drift for squid, fishing with jigs suspended a few metres off the bottom. It's always worthwhile putting out a rod baited with whitebait or squid for the many, many flathead, and occasional snapper which can be caught here during the summer months.
Hi guys, with the water still dirty from last week's rain conditions are less than ideal, however I was determined to get out off Aspendale on Sunday and try my new shrmp hunter jig......yes, I finally bought one to see what all the fuss was about these $24 jigs. To make this a legitimate test I fished for squid with 2 near-identical rods, one had a 2.5 blue and pink shrimp hunter, and the other my trusty 2.0 green yamashita. I only caught 2 squid in 3 hours, and both were on the shrimp hunter. I repeated the experiment Sunday night at Mordialloc pier, and yet again caught 2 squid on the shrimp hunter, none on green or orange 2.0 yamashitas.
I have to admit I was surpised, but the shrimp hunters do look more lifelike in the water. I'd like to repeat the test on a day when the squid are a bit more prolific. Has anyone else tried a test like this?
good to hear you are getting out there. i haven't been doing much fishing on account of the bad weather! but isn't it a ripper of a day today! i should out fishing at aspendale!
testing the jigs together in the same conditions is a good idea. i should do this more often.

It is a cracker of a day today, the kind of day that makes me want to tell the boss to shove it and go fishing. Good news is that the flathead seem to be back after their winter vacation, got about a dozen while conducting "the test", 2 of them were approaching 1kg.
ALSO if you can get out floundering this week (although the forecast is windy) do it! I got 2 gars a mullet and a good flathead last night in 40 minutes! If I didn't have to work today I would have stayed out all night, there were fish galore. I could've had a few more too but I snapped one of the prongs off my spear, and it's hard to hit gars with 2 prongs <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
i bent my spear a bit last time (the homemade one with the broom stick handle) when i went out..... but i have a aluminium neptune spear as a backup so should be no problem.
All this talk about testing different squid jigs has got me thinking that we are assuming that every squid we entounter will react in the same way to it.... hehehehehe

Haha, that's a good point AK. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Maybe the shrimp hunter only attracts the 'snobbiest' squid!
That's also why I'd like to have a day where I could use the 2 different jigs and fish until I get my bag limit of 10 - and then see what the breakdown is. A more significant number of squid caught would make the test better.
The squid are finally back along the eastern side of the bay, I caught my first in months while drifting for flathead and pinkies on Sunday. I was jigging with a soft plastic minnow when I got some odd pulls and jerks on the line. Gday Fatboi, I don't want to give away too much, but it's in between Mordialloc and Seaford - so yes a boat would help. But Mordi Pier should be seeing some squid at the next new moon (it's half full now on it's way to full, so it'll be a while). The squid I was getting (aside from the one in the pic) were not that much bigger than what you describe at Mornington, maybe 15 cm hoods? The squid that I catch this time of year all appear to be about this size - which in my opinion is the best size for eating, they are sweet! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />
Bagged out on Saturday morning, and again on Sunday afternoon. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Yamashita 1.8 and 2.0 jigs in green, orange and pink did the job. There are lots of bait fish about 2 inches long in the bay at the moment. Also caught 2 flathead on the squid jigs!!
