I went out fishing with my one of my friends dad on his 20 foot boat.
i was pretty ecsited to be on a boat like his we whent out to about 20m in depth to try for snapper but all we got was Flathead so desided to move into shallow water and drift for squid.we ended up catching 28 squid we could have had more but we would have been over our bag limit. we cought one 2 foot it was great.

Ive heard that squid are really thick around most peirs at the moment
anyone braved the cold and been out
I have heard alot of reports coming from Queenscliff and portsea peirs and its supposed to be full on at the moment

From the reports I have gathered the squid fishing season hasnt slowed much and I think that we wont have to wait for September for the next lot of migrating squid. Though things have been a bit quiet on the peirs at times the boaties arent having any problems getting their bag limits
right around Port Phillip Bay
The swan bay area is supposed to be overwhelmed by squid at the moment as is queenscliff and Pt. Cook areas
The days seem windy but night is very calm
If the wind drops by sunset tonight I might give Queenscliff a go

May and june good months in ppb, july has been quiet, although the size is improving 1/2kg.
Bagged out once in july and only failed to take bag on 3 occasions in may and june where i fished for squid on about 20 occasions as wind in may and start of june was rarely above 10kts.
Size 2.0 has been most succesfull followed by 3.5 while 4.0 yo-zuri shrimp hunters in any bright color always take the bigger ones.
Ecogear glowmax increases catches at night silver whiting has been useless because of the size of the calamari.
Low tide has been a waste of time 2hrs before and 1.5 after high has been best time if around midnight almost guaranteed to bag out in 1hr or so.
Polimar knot to main line and teardrop sinker underneath has increased hook ups dramatically.
Jigs fished without sinker underneath increases misses and adds 1 hr or 2 to the time you take your bag.

With the recent storms just wondering if anyone has been out in the bay with much luck lately??
Personally i havent coz i assume the water is still very dirty.

I'm still catching heaps of calamari, and it looks the arrow squid have arrived along the eastern side of the bay. I usually find from just before easter until maybe a month from now, there are very good numbers of squid in shallow water all the way along the eastern side of PPB.
AK, I have also noticed that the squid sizes vary depending on time of year, at the moment I'm catching all small-medium, with the odd larger specimen around 1kg. No thumpers yet!

An 'aussie pole'? Not me, I catch most of my squid from a boat, so I use fairly soft rods and 6-8 pound line. But poles can be useful for fishing from piers etc, I have one that I found washed up on the beach! Maybe it got pulled off a pier by a huge squid. The pole I found is MASSIVE, like 16 feet long or something ridiculous like that. But it's also quite heavy so you end up with tired arms if you use it for a long time.

They are still quite small, over the past few weeks pretty much all the squid I've been catching have been small-medium, I guess the hoods would be in the 12-20cm range. I think these are the squid that were spawned around PPB/WPB heads in Sep-Nov last year. I have been trying a range of jigs out, shrimphunters, yamashitas, yo zuris, and some of the jigs I won in the last squidfish competition, and I have caught squid on all of them, but by far the most consistent jigs are the shrimphunters, generally if I have a shrimphunter and another jig in the water at the same time, they have been hitting the shrimphunter first.

###### poles arent ridiculous! Mine is 21ft! you dont have to hold them, most good landbased old salts (verteran fishos) have special pier holders, my father has 6. The poel we use are light and are great for catching mullet and garfish to.
Do you think a strudwick sic stick, with a daiwa kastor 2000, 6lb fire line and 6lb leader would be a good rod set up, or maybe i could use 10 pound leader?

Hey Chick3n,
I have seen a lot of squid that people claim are 30, 40 or even 50cm hoods that are nowhere near it, I'm not saying you shouldn't believe these reports, just take them with a grain of salt. Remember it's pretty easy to post a report on the web, and exaggerate the size and number of your catch to impress people. I don't mean to harp on about this topic but I've seen enough dodgy reports over the past few years to be VERY sceptical of fishing reports from people I don't know personally.
Anyway onto the squid.........
The size of squid that you catch in PPB, in my experience, has a lot to do with where in the bay you are fishing, and what time of year it is. At this time of year, in between Mordialloc and Frankston, the majority of squid are all generally on the small-medium side, with the odd bigger one. Around Rye/Sorrento/Portsea/Queenscliff the average size seems bigger - if you wanted to chase bigger squid these are some of the piers I would be fishing on. Personally I am quite happy to catch the smaller ones because (1) they make better baits, and (2) they taste better than their big brothers.
If you were to fish these piers from September-January you would find a lot more of the larger squid as the spawners arrive to do their thing.
And apprentice - I meant no offence, I wasn't trying to say that long poles are ridiculous, just that they are very long compared to normal rods. The setup you mention sounds fine for squid, maybe a little on the 'flash' side, you don't really need a graphite rod like a sikstick to chase squid, but it will certainly do the job. I'm also not sure about using fireline, I prefer mono because it has more stretch to absorb the 'pumping' of a hooked squid. But I do use fireline for a lot of my other fishing (lures, soft plastics etc). If you want somewhere to use your pole, I launched the tinny from Mordialloc creek on Saturday, and on the way out of the creek mouth there was a long queue of guys fishing with poles, and they were pulling mullet out left right and centre. They were all fishing with small floats, not sure what bait though.

Hey guys
On the subject of those smaller squid I find the size keeps getting bigger as we get closer to winter
I know alot of you may say that squid season starts in september but I have had my best catches in the middle of winter around june or july but have found that the big ones do come around september time
my best night on squid was July around four years ago the tempreture was a sweaty 3 degrees and I bag right out plus some but I wont elaborate on what I did with the extra 14 I caught except a few people went home very happy that night.
most of the ones I got were around the 30 cm hood size which I would say were to big to be the ones spawned the previous season but yet who know how big they grow in six or seven months.

I often wonder about how quick squid grow, and where abouts the smaller squid I catch were spawned. Maybe given abundant food supplies a squid could grow that big in 6 months? I wouldn't be at all surprised, the more I learn about squid the more amazed I become.

I understand that squid grow pretty quickly and that the males die not long after they have mated boy what a way to go.
I might go for a sticky at queenscliff as the high tide is about 1am thats if I can brave the cold lol

That squid was caught in PPB by a bloke named Marco he frequents the Fishvictoria site and thinks he is the greatest squid fisho of all time but the guy has got his hand on it lol judging by the pic it was taken near the heads

I know where that squid was taken but Marco would kill me if I let slip...
I got onto a few more squid on the weekend, 5 small-medium calamari, 1 big arrow squid and an octopus fishing from a boat in close off Mordialloc, PPB. The squid bonanza seems to have slowed down over the past few weeks (for me anyway). All were caught on artificial jigs, brown 2.5 shrimphunter and orange 2.0 yamashita. There is an absolute s**tload of small baitfish in the bay at the moment, every flathead we caught spewed at least 2 or 3 out when landed, some of which were still alive! It made bait gathering very easy!

hey fishbyte, why am i the one with my hand on it? Judging by your comment that you think you're gonna catch a 7kg squid this season i reckon you are the one with your hand on it. And so what if it was caught near the heads? It is still in the BAY.
Jazz is right, he knows exactly where that squid was caught. It was about a week after i took him out with me and we got onto some thumpers!
