Newport Ri 2014 Squid Season
Ah, goat island, not deer island Smile. Thanks!
Quote:anyone that was fishing on the boats under the Newport bridge Friday night members of the forum?

Just responding to this.
There is tons of bait fish out there and sizes are very (big and small).

I noticed that there is not so many small bait fish swimming on surfaces but if you look closely you can find little bigger size bait fish swimming around.

What I've seen is squid chase mid~bigger size bait fish.

Everybody wonder why I catch more than they do and because I pay attention on that thing.
just curious about what depth you were catching at? where I was fishing, it was only about 6 ft and it seemed like everything was on the bottom. in the past I've always seen them come into the light and caught closer to surface

I'd like to say about 3~5 ft from surface.

When bite is slow they tend to be bite near bottom and you shouldn't using any weight for it.

It seems to be they like to bite when my jig is still sinking.
This just in from Frances fleet

There are some reports coming in that the squid are back on the beaches and are biting, We are planning on sailing Thursday- Sunday night for squid.

Thanks Bruce. most of my jigs have a built in weight but a few don't and I like to use one or two small split shots on the line about 12 inches above the jig. I've had really good luck in the past with this presentation and as a bonus it allows the jig itself to float about a foot from the bottom of the ocean floor and reduces snags and lost jigs.

went out last nite to goat island, fished for two hrs n got only 5 squids.  i think the season is over for goat island
It is probably is over except for a few small late schools. Still good along the South Shore of RI.  But it was the best run in a long time. ! hope the fall run is good.

Hi Matsquidman ... do you know when the fall run usually begins and ends?

It's hard to figure out how do they react on different set up.

Once when I dialed in, I am able to out catch than other guys.

I only been out there 7times this year but I already caught more than 1000 squids and I have to take a break because there is no room on my freezer for another squids.
Anyone had any luck at goat island recently or do we think the season is done?

Pretty much done. Since blue and striper moved in.

I saw tons of squid the other day but blue were feeding...

You know what's gonna be next.

Dead quiet...

Approximately when will squidding pick up again? I mean, around what month in the fall?
Quote:I've got the green LED 2ft light and it goes all night on one of those jump

packs that harbor freight sells for $40.  Had squid wrap themselves around

it.  Very well built, a little pricey, but always works and hangs by its own long cord.

On the other hand there has been nights where the one with the most light wins.

Honda 2000 with twin 500 halogens.  Ya its brite but had some of my best nights

under those lights.  Just a pain to haul and set up where the LED tube and jump

starter is really compact and easy to transport.
JANZ, quick question ... I just got my generator and saw that it came with the black and red alligator clips with cord that plugs into a 12V socket on the generator. Was wondering if I can attach the black/red alligator clips from the SuperBrite light to the ones plugged into the generator. When you attach your green SuperBrite light to your jump pack, are you attaching directly to the black & red clips as well? Thanks!
The light comes with adapters for 12v acc (cig lighter) and aligator clips

and yes red is pos and black is neg (dc of course)   I clip the red and black to

corresponding red black on jump starter.  As for gen you are correct that the

balck and red are for 12v dc.   If your gen has the eco switch it may have to

be turned off and gen at full speed to get 12v.   At least thats what my directions

for my gen say.  I have brought both and used both at same time and it is still

more convienient to use the jump starter for the led light.  That way you still have

light if you run out of gas or a plug comes undone (trip over it).  I am still up in the

air about which led color is better, white or green, I have the green and have seen

the whites in action, both seem to attract squid but the green seems to be brighter

and reaches out further.  Hope this helps a bit.  Got the itch real bad to get out

again, need to scratch it.

Hey JANZ, many thanks! This is my first season squidding and, assuming I do get the light (which will likely be a 2-foot green Hydro Glow type), I may hold off on the jump pack for now only because I've invested so much already. Maybe in the fall or next spring I will consider the jump pack. Do you know when the season picks up again in the fall?
