Problem With Small Squid Jigs

Though there seems to be a fad in using the most microscopic jig under the sun, I always avoid them unless they squid are small or extra cautious. These jigs have several problems I just cant stand.



There often lose you the squid. the barbs that come with small jigs are often small and very thin. There is simply no chance of lifting a large squid or even dragging it in if it chose to go ape faeces and fight back( some squid Ive caught must have been on steroid and actually fight in short bursts). The hook up rate is very poor. Several times right in front of me the small barbs just simply miss the squid when you slowly tighten the line. All you get is a blob of ink and the squids gone.



You also cannot cast very far with them. I have an ultra light outfit with 6lb Fireline which can manage a decent distant but not as I expect.

the same thought has crossed my mind, small jigs have smaller barbs which could make it harder to stay attached to a thumper squid, but have yet to catch a squid on anything smaller than a size 2 jig.



I did however buy a small razorback thinking the extra barbs may help increase chances of landing the squid <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' />

if you hook a big squid on a small jig you should use a net or pick it up rather than try to lift it straight out of the water. small jigs can be good in areas that get a hammering. in more remote areas, you can use a bigger jig and the squid will still take it.

Yeh I agree that small jigs may do it in hard fished areas. But I would say about 1 in 5 squid attacks fail to hook on my small Yo Zuris. maybe its time for me to try a small yamashita!
