Hi Guy's



Fished at Portsea Pier Yesterday and caught 3 x 1-1.5 Calamari and they were the sweetest I have tasted.



Used Grey cheeky Jigs

went to portsea for squid on sat nite my dad caught this big one a i caught a small squid but 2 nice size cuttle fish after that the seal came and we left portsea is a nice place to catch squids and cuttle fish

Yep there were ink marks right at the end of the pier. There was a lot of sea lice out last night I was only there from 11pm to 12:30am but About two week’s ago I went they and got 3 20cm squid

PORTSEA:

Staff member Don Smith and Angie the squid legend fished the pier during the week to land 2 squid to 2 kilos, and 2 others to 750 grams. All 4 fish were taken on Shrimp Hunter squid jigs in brown colour.



Don also mentioned that the local anglers have been fishing during the night with silver whiting under a float and taking squid in good numbers around the 2.5 kg mark.

hey ppl,



went down to portsea a few days ago for the first time since last year. the weather was perfect!..got down there at about 730am to find the local old pro's already there at the prime spot on the end of the pier (great for the morning run)...so me and my mate who was on his first ever fishing trip set up along the first length of the pier with some whiting and jigs..but with no luck we went down to rye and got some lunch and some beers, waited for a few hours and returned to portsea at about 130pm .



ive found it can be really productive along the first stretch of the pier in the afternoon/dusk~evening..so we set up again there. and within about 10 minutes my mate pulled in a great sized squid with a silver whiting that he was casually casting and retrieving....and just as i'd netted his, i looked out to see that my float was nowhere to be seen, so i quickly started winding in and realised i had something big! to my surprise there was another squid hooked up which is the biggest ive caught so far..

been to portsea 26th nov, seem not productive (be there 20min, no one got any), so went to serrento, 4 squids caught size about 28 to 35 cm in 20min.

I am a squid catching newbie. We went to Portsea around 2pm today. Beautiful day, calm seas, but after 2 hours standing at the pier with our jig, we caught nothing. Is this the wrong time of day or year to catch them on the Peninsula?

i have a few tips on squidding at portsea that may help u. this time of year should still be fine for squid. althought it is really good, a few weeks into the spawning season which i think is around sept-oct



From my experience , the best peak times seem to be either early morning-6am-10:30am approx. and from about 2:30/3:oo pm ~into the evening past sundown.



Conditions: not too choppy, hot days can be really good. you may notice that it can be real crap if the dive schools are running and there are lots of ppl swimming all around the pier-but thats just luck of the draw.



in the morning one of the best spots is right at the end of the pier, and in the arvo/dusk the first stretch along the pier b4 u turn Right can be really productive. (but u can have luck anywhere on that pier depending on the day.)



im not sure what jigs u are using but something around the 1.5gm-3 weight range , and the brands Yamashita or Yozuri are some good ones to try (there are many brands to choose from) experiment and have a few to choose from in ur tackle box. pink, orange Yamashita jigs & the brown shrimp hunter-jigs have treated me well at most piers.



But apart from artificial jigs, one of the BEST baits when the large squid are around is a silver whiting rigged up on a bait jig under a float. u can buy it either fresh from the markets or most good tackle shops. in fact you'll probably find that most big squid u catch will fall for the silver whiting and not as often on artificial jigs. on a good day tho , they'll go for anything.

Pell, i forgot to mention that when u are using a jig which is around 1.0~3 gm range u may want to rig it up so that you have small sinker at the bottom, kinda like a paternoster rig . that way it will sink nicely getting down to the right depth a bit quicker.

I went to the HMAS Cerberus (Naval Base) open day today near Crib Point/Hasting area. Convinced a couple of friends to skip work, so I met them and others at Portsea Back beach when I was done. Only one large (VERY large) salmon caught early. I walked the pier in hope but saw no fresh ink stains until I got to the far end of the pier.



There was an old Italian guy with 3 medium sized squid in a bucket dark with ink but he was complaining so much about "me waste the time always" that I believed him when he told me he'd been there 5hours. The baited jags he was dragging in were untouched.



It was a 30degree day in the city but only about 24 degrees down there and very comfortable. We called it a day around 5pm and had a BBQ at the Rye Pier. Got back into town and I took my missus for a breezy beach cruise to get out of the roasting hot house.



Anyway, we stopped in at Sandringham around 9pm and saw a good number of fresh ink stains along the first third of the pier! Spoke to a fella who says he's catching 3-4 there a few times a week for the past few weeks. "Here's always good for a plateful", he said. Looks like I've got a new favourite spot <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

PORTSEA:

I have had numerous reports of good numbers of calamari taken from the Portsea pier this week. There have been some good size ones to a kilo in weight taken on the flood tide. The most productive coloured jig has been the Pilchard coloured Hayabusa.

PORTSEA PIER:

I had quite a few reports of good calamari being landed from the Portsea pier this week. Late afternoon has been most productive with anglers fishing silver whiting under a squid float.

There has also been salmon in the area; anglers armed with a selection of soft plastics have been hooking into them.

PORTSEA PIER:

I fished at Portsea pier on Wednesday morning with mates Gwayne Blake from Think Big Charters, Donuts and Ben. Together we each managed a nice bag of calamari to 1.5 kilos in weight. Brown coloured Hiramatsu jigs where the most productive.
