Squid Fishing In Malaysia

I have been trying to locate some good squid (sotong) and cuttlefish fishing spots in malaysia.



1) Fishing around the town of Nenasi in the Pahang Region is quite productive for cuttlefish. (This is on the east coast of Malaysia).



2) Pulau Perhentian (or Perhentian Island) is good for sotong (or squid). This island is off the east coast of Malaysia near the Kuala Besut township.



3) Kapas Island -which can be accessed by boat from Marang fishing village which is 17km south of the Kuala Terengganu township - is good for squid fishing and it is possible to go on squid jigging tours. I belive squid fishing is referred to as "Candat Sotong" - the fishing is best between March and September and prior arrangements need to be made with the fishermaen before they set out on their night excursions. Most established tourist resorts can arrange a trip for you given a lead time of two days. 4) Pulau Redang (or Redang Island) is located 45km offshore from the Kuala Terengganu township and it is also good for squid fishing (Candat Sotong).

I've been lurking on this forum and has been a squid-jigging fan for a while. Here in Penisular Malaysia, squid-jigging with artificial lures are popular at the East Coast States such as Pahang, Terengganu and Johor.



You can try them out at :



Johor : Mersing, Pulau Sibu and Pulau Tinggi - Most of the squids here are smaller compared to those in Terengganu



Terengganu : Kuala Terengganu, Marang, Merang, Setiu and Kuala Besut - some of the best spots for squid jigging are found here. The largest specimen - Sotong Torak - measuring more than 1 feet are found along the coastal waters off Terengganu. Kelantan : Head to a coastal fishing town called "Tok Bali". Here, boat charters are offered by fishermen for RM450-RM500 a night depending on the classification of their vessel. I have figured out that "Pulau" means "Island" in Malaysian. Is "Kuala" another geographical term? As in Kuala Terengganu and Kuala Besut...?



Also thanks very much for posting the photographs. They are great. Hopefully this will encourage other anglers in Malaysia to start sharing their experiences fishing for sotong.

Kuala = River mouth, usually, most riverine towns or cities in Malaysia are referred as Kuala _ _ _ _



I've been jigging for squid for a coupla years. Usually, recreational outing as such is big in Terengganu. Its also a heavily promoted sport by the Federal and State Government of Malaysia..

Yep! That's an Alvey Handspool allright! There are different seasons for squid in Malaysia. From December to March, the best parts are Kedah, Perlis and Penang.



I'm located here on Langkawi in the State of Kedah, and last week I caught about 200 squids only using one Rod and no light.



Squid up to 2kg are quite often here to be caught.

Hi Glen,



2 types of squid, if you mean species I'm not sure about it. I'm catching 2 types of squid, one to use as live bait and during the season also for sale.



In the none squid season it can be sometimes a little bit tough and involve long hours, as we need at least 30 squids to use as bait.

I go Sibu Kelong very often for Fishing and i especially love Squid Fishing. Can anyone give me the Colours of Squid Jig to use during the Day and at Night ?



Does Blue Squid Jig works during the Day and Pink Squid Jig at Night ?

and I'm still trying to find good spots in East malaysia Borneo. haha



If you are shore based, Sutera Harbor is a good place to reach bluewater for squid. The spot which i recommend a proper jetty be built with night lights for fishing.
