Squid fishing is really popular over here, especially from June to November. In July and August, although the size of the squids is smaller (we call the small squids "chipirones"), the best fishing spots from shore are crowded.
Sometimes you even need to "queue" and wait till someone leaves so you can take a small place for you and your rod.
The best fishing spots from the coast are: Lastres, Tazones, Luanco, Tapia de Casariego, Cudillero and "El Musel". From boat you can go anywhere.
Almost everybody uses Yo-Zuri lures, the most popular colors are Orange, Pink and Red, green is also very used. People use to attach a green artificial light (Starlite) at 30 cm from the lure, it attracts more squids.
There are two ways you can catch squids from the coast, one is "caceando" (is like spinning, you let your lure sink, and you retrieve it slowly), its really exciting when the tide is low or the water very clear, because sometimes you can see the bottom and the squids coming behind your lure, and you can be playing with them.
Another way is "poteando", this can be a little boring, but its more effective (since you use 3 or 4 lures the odds are higher) and you can catch the big ones, because these are at the bottom. For this you need a 5 to 8 meter rod, and at the end of the line you place a "potera", is like a plumb lure (these lures were used in the old days), and you place as many other lures as you like (2 to 4) leaving 40 to 50 cm between them. The chances of getting squids with four lures are obviously much higher.
Now in September to December we catch the biggest squids, sometimes they weight more than 2 or even 3 kilos. When the sea is calm, and the day rainy is good. Stormy days (with thunder) are the best.
You must avoid windy days or with bad sea conditions.
The best time of day is 2 hours before sunset and all night long, then sunrise is a good hour too.
Its also very usual to catch octopus if you are fishing squid, and of course cuttlefish, sometimes you get more cuttlefishes than squids (in winter), and their size much bigger.
