Spain Squid Fishing
#1
Hi everone, I just had an interesting conversation with Fionn at a UK website and was told that squid fishing is a national obsession in spain! so i thought to myself we really need a thread about squid fishing in spain at squidfish.net <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

I would be interested to hear from any spaniards as to which spots are good for squid fishing in spain.

Fionn explained that -

Quote:...squid fishing was particulalrly popular on warm, balmy summer nights in the local ports.

The general rule (in Spain) is to go for squid at night, on a rising tide, with the prospective area well flood-lit.

Cuttlefish can be caught during the day, in the right conditions, & even at low tide. they tend to be on or near the bottom, over sandy areas with 'poseidon grass'.

Squid of course will attack near the surface, at mid-waters & near the bottom, and generally at night, but I've caught good specimens late afternoon. I love that sensation when you see two or three squid 'dancing' behind your lure, pure adrenalin!! the preference (in Spain) is for bright red or orange yo-zuri lures.

We also use a small phosphorescent tube about 50cms from the lure, this helps vision wise, rather than attracting the beast itself.

I use a triple swivel (?), tie the reel line to one end, tie about 30cms of 0.25mm line to the other end, on the end of this I loosely crimp a small shot, this has the effect of bringing the lure down to the required depth, with the shot bouncing along the sea-bed instead of the lure, thereby avoiding unwanted snags. oh', and the lure is clipped onto the other part of the swivel. seems so much easier to draw these things!! hope this helps.

Thanks Fionn for information! Much appreciated

Cheers, Glen <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

hi! it's fionn, or macmaghnusa as I'm registered on here. if there are any spaniards reading this, correct me if I'm wrong, but 'la pesca de calamar/sepia' is more popular in the north (basque country, cantabria, asturias & galicia) than on the mediterranean coast & andalucia's atlantic coast, isn't it?

best,

mac

I think the 'codmen' of WSF tend to look down on the recreational quest for cephalopods. as I said, my first post on there was about squid & it was ignored! still habits & customs change fast, don't they? your question about land based spots. I'm based in the 'rias baixas', which refers to the series of 4 estuaries in the southern half of galicia on spain's north west atlantic coast. these rias are rich in marine life & attract large shoals, particularly in the summer months, of sardines, horse mackerel etc; it is thought that the squid & all the predators attracted to those, follow them in. so, fishing can be hectic at times, though at other times, downright boring, like everywhere I suppose. any well-lit fishing village, small commercial port will do. you only have to look towards the end of the quay, harbour wall etc, to see it festooned with people squidding, literally side by side. I don't think it could catch on in the UK, 'cos they have a different concept on what can be considered ''vital space". it was tough for me at first, but it also a social thing, you hear some bizarre conversations some nights & it can be a real hoot at times. I love it. a word of warning. most of the big commercial ports & therefore the brightest, in terms of flood lighting, are off limits to the general public. just head for the small places like campelo, combarro, raxó, sanxenxo, a toxa, o grove (home to a mega seafood fest in october) & go with the flow! que pesqueis mucho!!

best,

mac

certainly has, not just for squid though, but the atlantic coast of huelva, straights of gibraltar offer some of the finest fishing in the world. 200kg+ red tuna, incredibly combative species like anjovas, dentones, urtas, doradas, llampugas, corvinas, samas, serviolas, palometones, lubinas - the list is endless. sorry, but don't know the english names for these species. googling the names will probably throw up info though...

Mac provided the following interesting info about octopus fishing in spain -

Quote:the locals here use a hand line (from a boat in shallow waters) with a lure in the form of a crab, which has two sharp prongs on the underside. it is made to 'move' across the sea-bed, preferably a sandy one,  thereby provoking the attack of the octopus. the commercial boys use pots, or 'nasas' as they are called here.

Thanks again Mac <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

Hi

Me and a couple of friends are visiting galicia from the 19/06/07 - 26/06/07.

We will be going as far south as vigo to look at the islas cies. and going up as far north as coruna.

I believe we will be going to a festival in pontevedra on the night of the 23rd.

we are hoping to do a little squid fishing. Can you fish the port at muros at night / is it any good?

any info you could give us on where/when to go, what tackle to use etc. would be great as none of us have ever been squid fishing before.

Regards

Brendan

Hi,

Its me again, it's been a while since the last comment <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

The squid fishing season has just started, although we have been catching cuttlefishes since February, this year has been (and is being) extraordinary good with them, the last time i went to catch cuttlefishes, i caught 5, the smallest weighed around 1 kilo, the biggest over 3 <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> I have pictures if you want to see them

Now the first squids are coming, however they are still very small and you need ver very tiny jigs to catch them. They are caught at night in some spots. Its like a fever now in summer, there can be over 50 or 60 people fishing for squids/cuttlefishes (and octopus) up to 7 am in the morning all night long.

I think that this season is going to be really good. The best spots in northern spain are, Lastres, Cudillero, Tazones and the Gijon harbour.

hi all i live in england but i am of spanish decent so i go to spain when ever i can having only returned from spain on the 26th aug. im new to fishing but am now hooked on squiding as i spoke to a couple of people to find out what i needed and where to go etc. it seems to be busier on calm nights where i went at the start of the long stone pier near the castillo de san anton in la coruna north galicia thats north/west of spain, about 20 people where squiding including 3 women they were all shoulder to shoulder and i mean shoulder to shoulder as in touching shoulders every one i saw used a pink lure with a glow light about 30cm away from it no floats every one was casting and retreiving strait away at verying speeds. i only saw one person using a lure with a red led flashing inside of it but he didnt catch anything. i did manage to catch 1 one night while everybody else was catching them every 20 mins or so. i think i need alot of practice. just before i left to fly home i got told that you do need a licence to sea fish which is available from the town hall. any one who can go should as the north of spain is the real spain it might help if you know a little spanish as the older generation doesnt tend to know english as its not a tourist destination.

Hi everybody, this is my first comment in this forum! (Buenas, Astur!) I would like to comment some spots in Coruna and Ferrol zone, i am from Coruna City but we use to go to Lorbe Harbour and Sada Harbour the reason is quiet than Coruna, we use to go since april to december if the time is good, we use to catch "baby" squids (chipirones), squids (6" to 8"), cuttlefish (Chocos) and Octopus, is very rare to see Humboldt in "Rias" zone, other places to fish is near Ferrol such Mugardos Harbour, A Graña (Military Zone), Navantia/Astano (Fene, harbour docks) and Pias bridge, sorry for my bad english!

P.D: Astur can you tell us some information about the GREATS Handmade Asturian´s Squid Jigs? very very good jigs a little bit expensive but effective!
