Greenport, NY - 2006 squid season
#1
We did a combined Fluke/Squid trip to Greenport last night. The fluking was cold (2 for the afternoon), but the squid were there.

We set up in about 20 feet of water on the beaches north of claudios using 2 x 500 watt spreaders and a hydro-glo 4' submersable light. Chum was a soup made up of a chum log, bunker oil, and some mystery scent. We had all kinds of small baitfish in our lights.

We had a steady pick at them for about two hours before the wind really started to crank to about 20 or 25 knots. Got about 20 in that time, not a lot but it was fun anyway.

We then got slammed heading back across the sound. I love running in heavy chop in the dark. Not.

If the weather cooperates, I may try newport next. Did I mention how much I like running the sound in bad weather at night?

hi gt,

i had a report from greenport dock. there has been lots of squid about but they have been chasing eels rather than jigs which have made them hard to catch apparently.

cheers, glen <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

The reason why squiding is so slow is because of the spawning season. If you look closley all the squid are a pink color right now, meaning they are in the spawning season. From this week and on (May 12th and on) the squid will start to turn white, once they turn white, they go into an eating stage. Greenport squid should start to pick up and be very good, very soon.

Squid fishing should be good for the next 2 weeks at greenport docks. From may 12th and on we should see some better fishing.

I just ordered a bunch of really nice jigs from squidjigwarehouse.com - anyone order from there? These new types of jigs have really never been used at the greenport docks, they might work pretty well....going to try them out soon
