Newport, Ri - 2007 Squid Season
NeverBlanked,

Sorry you didn't have a good time.

I have been fishing at GI as long as you are i see alot. I gave up fishing at the bridge. I enjoy fishing at the wall under neath of basketball court, warmer, place to sit, nicer people. I'm afraid to fish this weekend, i will be spectator this weekend

TL
I plan to head up this weekend on my boat. Plan to park at Ft. Adams. Are there also a ton of boats? I'm taking the boat just so I can avoid all the pushing and shoving on the bridge! Anyone else ever launch out of Ft. Adams? I called and the harbor master told me it's free.
Does anyone want to venture a guess as to why the squid have arrived in Newport, RI before Greenport NY, even though Greenport is further south and (I presume) has warmer water? Has anyone, by chance, taken a water temperature measurement by the GI bridge? I'd like to compare to Greenport NY (will measure tonight).

Good luck to all.

Ft Adams isn't a bad launch (I've been at alot worse). The way out warrants caution as the channel out is not too wide and rocks are found easily. Stay to the left once you go into the park ( Ithink that's what it is) and the parking area opens up and there is plenty parking. The boats in the area are few or at least it has been in the past. If there was another trailer there it was crowed.

Hey, thanks Striper1, on the way out from Ft. Adams there is a channel though, right? If I stay in it, I assume I'll be ok??? I have a 17' Wahoo. The trip up to GI looks pretty straight forward.

How about the launch at Kings Park? Can you park there? My concern with Ft. Adams is that it probably closes after dark? How bad is the squid ink on the boat? Is it possible to keep it under control or will it be all over the boat (assuming we get any!)?

The park might close at dusk (I do not know) but the boat launch is to the right as soon as you enter the park. I have been there over night the past 3 years and I have never had a problem.

I have a 26' Seaswirl with the Alaskan pack and have not had a problem at low tide as long as you stay in the channel. It is not marked too well or maybe it could have been the cover of darkness but is you have a GPS and leave in the sunlight just follow your track back in the cover of darkness.

Striper...if you have a gps...would you please give me the coordinates where you park your trailer and/or launch your boat. Never been there so I'm clueless...thanks.

I was about 2 miles up the bay from Newport today and the water temp was 55. Probably 53 or 52 at the bridge.

Anyone care to take a few photos of the bridge on a busy squidding session? Just would like to see how big the bridge is and how many people are there <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rolleyes' />
Combat fishing? Ughh. I'll wait until my boat is in the water.

I can't get it tonight but I will get to you. When do you think you will be squidding next? I am going Tuesday Night. I can get you a close co-ordinate now but an exact one Wednesday.

I was fishing at GI bridge from 5pm on Thursday until 3am, snf caught 185 squids!!

I started catching squids right away but stopped from 5:30 til 8pm.

I had good action from 8pm til 10pm but stopped 10pm until 11pm due to slack tide. The it came back again until I stopped fishing at 3am.

During outgoing tide, the squids were a bit off the bottom and I had to lift the jig a bit to have good action.

I was debating myself whether I should stop and get some sleep or fish until bite stops for several hours....

I finally gave up at 3am while they are still biting.

Somewhat most of squids are female (Smaller and round shape). Males (Large and shapes like arrow) occasionally came to hug my jigs. Usually, males show up first and females follow.

My friend went to Greenport last night as well, and it wasn't good. There are only 10-20 people out there and each only caught 0-5 squids.......

>NeverBlanked,

I really feel your pain. There are so many people who do not consider others. They steal your spot while you untangle your line or so. They even cast jigs over the people. They throw garbages.........

I guess they take fishing a way too serious like their business (May be they sell squids?). For me, fishing is one of my recreational activities.

Anyway, I'm glad I could sneak out my work and enjoy the "Can't stop jigging" time without much of crowds.

I'll try fishing on Frances next weekend due to chaotic crowd.
Hello Striper1...thanks for your quick respond. I'm going tomorrow (Sat. the 5th around 9PM). SpawnLe suggested me not to go on boat because this is my first time. Once I get your exact coordinates, I will try to launch my boat in Fort Adams and use the new ramp. Thanks in advance.

Want to cut down on the people on the bridge?

Newport should sell squid fishing licenses for $8. If cops don't see you with one BaNG $20 fine and get kicked out for the night. But that will never happen, people would throw fits. I really don't like fishing with 100s of people at the same time, but that is just me. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/moped.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rolleyes' />

Hi Squidmon,

I don't mind paying for fees to fish from the bridge if that happnes. Actually, it creates some revenue to the town and hopefully, they could provide some bathroom and fresh water, and less crowd.
fort adams here are some pics and a chart and numbers from my mapping software

LAT 41 28.254 n

LON 071 20.202 w

approx numbers... as youy can see on the chart, now real problem with depth... bigger problem is dodging all the mooring balls

good luck... I will be launching sometime between now and 4 am

Thanks for your time and effort STork...the visually helped me alot....nice pics...same as Spawnle

I have launced my boat (20' aquasport) there. It's tight and there isn't a lot of parking spaces but there wasn't alot of boats either. Someone posted that the ramp is much improved. You should be ok. Snaildarter
