When you say harbour area, where do you mean exactly?



I was looking on a map of the area and there is Boston Harbor, Salem Harbor, Marblehead Harbor, etc. It would be great if you could tell us exactly where the squid are biting. Also the names of some of the good squid piers would be very helpful too!

LoL i knew this was going to happen. but i will spill.



Squid can be found near any open water channel.. squid as I have found in Australia travel to breed and eat. Though the problem with many squid fishermen here in MA/RI is that they only pursue when they are gathering heavily near the shore for breeding.



The squid i am catching are a bit small and soon I will be catching the young of the year. Also I am considering the squid I catch in June are different than the ones I catch in july. No one believes me but I am pondering it.





As for locations.. I have caught squid off a boat in most deeper water channels. I pick them up on rader (need color one) and just drop the jig. I haven't been on the boat this year. But last year I found them by the harbour islands.





So far I am catching squid in Quincy. But I definitly know squid can be caught from most piers in boston, such as south boston piers. castle island. reverve pier ( its if 'y). they are there regardless if you catch or not.



As for other harbours Iam sure there is squid up north too. I just hate driving up north to look. But if you guys are keen giv it a try.

Over here is australia we can catch squid all year round so I was always surprised how the US fishers tended to only fish for a month or so and then give up!!!

the problem with the north east area squid (coastal) is that we have a short fishing season and a long winter. Generaly speaking there is not much action in the ocean for fishing in the winter. Actually there is none at all. But there are rumors about cod circulating around but I have tried for the past 6 years with only one bite for the action. Anyways.. besides that the squid are here all late spring, summer, and into autmun. But the problem is many people only fish for them when the squid are a. about to run. or b. running. or sometimes c. when the run is about over. The run is absolutely incredible as person can catch multiple 5 gallon bucks FULL of squid. Here in Massachusetts, even the nation i believe, there is no recreational limit on squid which is unlike AU.



However, they are spawning squid. the squid I am catching still contain eggs and milt. US squid fishers have it a bit spoiled. they only fish when they are running good. When they are not, they think they arent there or they are too small. Our squid here are similar to your arrow squid. Highly aggressive and migratory. I really enjoyed the AU reef squid (calamari). I spent most of my time in AU watching them in crystal clear waters how they approach and react to jigs. I have learned a lot in AU.



I have tried new tactics here in US. And so far they have worked very well. It is quite funny how people dont believe me or ignore what I tell them (what i learned in AU and Japanese style jiggin) They much rather wait for the big run than try for a challenge. The area I live in is quite productive.. maybe even more so than AU. But it is a short season.





In terms of squidin.. they are there all summer long.. maybe not in numbers but definitly enough for live bait =)



As for the open ocean outside of Massachusetts.. there is plenty of squid out there and gars (half beaks we call them). Just need a big old light in the middle of the ocean -=)

Been contact tym for over a week, finally I got a chance to go and prove tym wrong.



oh boy I was wrong, I got there around at 8:15 PM, my first cast i got a squid ..

I got about 10 squids then got to leave around at 9:15...



I can see lots of squids swimming around ... will post pix tomorrow.

Squid is a bit small compare to Newport in early May, but it was fun to fish for them 'again'

1tym let me pick your brain. Where I have been fishing for strippers the last couple weeks I have noticed squid darting around and grabbing bait fish. Now here is my problem there is a ton of bait fish and I mean a ton. just about every jig I have tried to throw they just don't seem to be interested in. I am very successful with my technique in the spring. I know this because people always ask me how I am catching squid when they are not and I am using the same jigs. I just have never had to fight with this much natural bait before. figured you might be able to give some pointers you have picked up and seeing how you have had good success. Does tides matter for a good bit I have noticed the squid pretty much on almost any tide. but is there a better tide for getting a good bite? light isn't an issue there is plenty of light . and the contrast between light and dark is well defined. just figured i would ask. the only things left I can think of are jig size to better match the bait or maybe a bait rig?

SPRING SQUID are highly aggressive. your jigs. like any newport squidder. i presume are yo zuri laser or look alike or some minnow type jig with a counter balance weight inside the jig.



try another jig. try another method. i often use a free style jigging method involving a jig that sinks faster than the minnow suspending jig. no weight jus cast out and retrieve.. either jig and wait. or slow reel.. or lik your fishing for bluefish. Worked great in australia.. cant wait to try it on the squid out on the banks when sharking.

if you could pm with your location or jus general region i can pm another trick that will most likely catch em. edit* reason being squid are often quite moody. i have seen schoolin sqquid under a light picking away at small stuff in the water but dont take any notice to jigs. however i was able to get to take a good look at the jig.. but way to much work to get em to bite. if i kno where i think u are fishing there mayb another answer as to why they dont bite.

squid is sloww with the moon.. im scratching my head.. better water levels next week so hopefully that will change things.. else there has been a higher level of predators in the area maybe scaring off the squid i am catchin. might try another spot -=)
