Newport, Ri - 2008 Squid Season
Update:

at GI from 9:30pm to midnight got 25...

Man, I think squids just starts to run, last night i seen so many of them on top water. ( maybe it's a month late ?, it woman's term, that means trouble .... haha!)

They are all over Goat Island, but too bad they bite only about 15 mins while I was there, then the wind pick up and the cold air moves in, after that the squids just move up and down, they don't even look all of the jig(s) ... no matter what rigs I try.

One of the the guy using triple hooks (5 of them) and snag them for about 30 mins, i think he got about 1/2 buckets when I left.

Will try again tonight...

Tony, thanks for the update, we may try tonight. If not tonight Friday is a definite. Our son is graduating high school this weekend so Saturday and Sunday are out for us.

I got to get the triple hooks rig setup ....

Yes, I'm going. I'll call ahead to reserve 2 spots if you are going. Already told the wife I'd be home by 3:30 am..lol
Yea, I will be there. I have a couple questions:

You don't have to pay in advance to reserve a spot, do you?

What time should I get there? (we want to get a good spot)

What should I bring? (no need for lanterns, right?)

Thanks. I'll see you tonight.
Any Frances Fleet reviews from last night? I am thinking about going tonight.

Thanks.

Friday, May 30th

Capt. Ray reported the squid fishing was decent last night. The bite was a bit off due to some very strong tides but once the tide eased off anglers became busy catching nice size squid with the more experienced anglers ending up with a third to a half bucket full and a few guys even a bit more. Mixed sizes but plenty of nice size tubes. Next squid trip sets sail this evening aboard the Lady Frances at 7pm.
I saw that, but was hoping for a review from a real customer on the boat.

Thanks anyways.
update:

Goat Island from 9pm to 11pm .. got 15 squids ... lots of squids on the surface but no bites...

I was out on the boat last night - my first time on the Frances Fleet. I would do it again just because it was fun, but the catch was unimpressive. I ended up with 22, and some far more experienced squid fishers around me ended up with much less. There were 2 people I saw having what I would have thought was a good night, but they didn't seem too thrilled. It's more than I've been catching on the bridge recently, but I didn't see any 1/2 buckets full.

Somerville and I went out on the Frances last night. To say the bite was off is true. I only put 5 or 6 in the pail. Joe (somerville squid) had around 20. Compared to last sat night where I had almost a full 5 gal pail, last night was a disapointment. wind was blownin onshore and tide was rippin. There was a pretty good rockin to the boat. If the wind calms down tonight, it will prolly be much better then last night. Thanks again Joe for grabin a reflector and I forgot to thank you for the wonderful burger....that I was able to hold down for an hr.. lol I Owe ya
fished near the francis fri night, bout 1/4 bucket in about 3 hours. If we had anchored we probably would have done better. Didn't get close enough to the francis to see how they were doing. Also first keeper bass on the boat (first trip as well) yesterday in the rocks at fort getty. So far so good. Pearl diver, Thanks for the info on the west gap. proved usefull. See ya out there , Eatfish

Haha, I guess next time we'll have to go with hot dogs. Like you predicted, the weekend weather doesn't look great, so maybe the end of next week/next weekend i'll give it another shot. I don't know if you're up for another boat trip, but i'm considering one. Thanks again for the reflector.

Update: Friday night GI, caught 60 squid, not to many people there, everyone was catching. Suzy and I had a great time. Thanks Rob/Bob and Spawnie for the light.

Friday night looks good for me, wife has to chaparone a graduation dance, told me to go fish. Either bridge or boat works for me. I went out and bought new supplies for makin rigs. Fluorocarbon leader (totally invisible in water) and bearclaw line leader connectors. I can't wait to try them out. I believe the squid were seeing my leader and snap swivels, thus the limited strikes. Lemme know which is good for you.

Update at GI:

Friday: 95 squids ... so far best night of the season, everyone was catching .. not as great as last year, but everyone got something.

Saturday: 30 squids ... the squids are around .. the weather wasn't as great as friday night... rain+winds...

If anyone going to night, please report.

John: Robert and his son got a 180 squids, a bucket full on Friday. On average squid only takes about 100 squids to fill a bucket, this year squid a bit smaller. I check with few friends of mine, they all got around a bucket on Friday night.

I might go tonite, I've got a generator and one 500 watt light. Can you still park near the bridge or do I need to pay a meter to park and how much, any idea?

Brad

p.s. I just checked N.O.A.A. weather broadcast and they said the wind will be out of the west (or N.W.) 10-15 knots and 5-10 knots after midnight on the bay so on the wall the wind would be in our face and on the bridge from the left side. Has anyone fishhed G.I. in those conditions?

With the price of gas I'd hate to drive all the way over there and not be able to catch anything. Thanks.
Upon hearing these *squid* updates.. me and mr boston decided to take a ride with believing the squid were all done..

After fishing til morning... regardless of the muggers and the snaggers.. and the learning curve, we filled a bucket together... well.. over filled the bucket..

I did not count how many but i jus skimmed the top of the bucket.. there was about 50..

Not fast pace by all means, but not boring.. a squid at least every 5 minutes..

I am going to make a wild guess we probably caught 200 squid, he might think more?

That's great, I think there is still another week left. The water temperature is perfect. It took awhile this year to hit 55 because of the cool spring, but now it will heat up fast and the majority of squid will leave or go to deeper colder water.

We would have had maybe another bucket if I got with the program with the learning curve earlier. I've said the whole night either a bucket or bust! and I can happily say me and 1tym accomplished this last night/morning. People around us were starting to call 1tym the squid king LOL, I mean who has the skills to catch squid with two rods at one time!?! My bet was we probably caught at least 200 squid, Most squid was on the smaller side thats why I think there was more than the usually estimate on a full bucket, but we did manage some nice largers ones here and there. Nice meeting you Somerville Squidman!
I saw this guy have 3 rods and he was catching left and right .. he had a rod holder attach to the bridge and keep moving back and forth with them, it was fun to see, but I was so tired so I head home. .. already got my sunday plan out <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':zorro:' />

Yup, there was the learning curve of catching the squid this year .. it was odd ... after learning it with trail and error you can easily get the squids to bite ...

tym1/mrboston: did you guys catch it on the bridge or at the cove ?

p.s: I got PM that ask for pix, for those who doesn't believed squid are a month late ...
