Newport, Ri - 2009 Squid Season

Has anyone tried Cape Cod canal?? Are they still in there? I caught a lot of squid there years ago!

probably overfishing by commercial fishermen and natural predation... i can't imagine recreational fishermen having a great deal of impact on the species... i read somewhere that stiper fishing are better these past few years than previous years... coincidence?



and by the way i've been hearing that regular weather cycles have shifted 2 weeks from their usual calendar cycles... global warming?? who knows...

And the Cod run this year was the best it's been in twenty years. Classic predator-prey interaction... The prey population spikes, followed by the predators and a subsequent decrease in prey, repeat ad nauseum.



I've also heard that there were bluefish caught last week over in Mattapoisett. If the predatory fish are showing up this early, I suppose that could keep the squid offshore...



BTW lots of activity on this thread tonight... I guess that means there aren't too many people squidding.

depends on where you're coming from, who's paying for fuel, what the weather is doing, how fast you're going, what kind of power is pushing you....



i never said the island was a long way away.



my family has a house on the island. i'd much rather pay for a ferry ticket than pay for my own boat fuel to go over each time.

a few things to remember.. the squid run here coastal new england is in large numbers in the spring.. they come here for one thing. that is to spawn.. some of the squid stick around for the reminder of the year.. most move out or perish.. baby squid too..





IF ONE CATCHES THEM BEFORE THEY SPAWN who is left to replenish? surely they spawn all over the ocean.. but do they? squid here in hte northeast are not quite fully under stood scientifically.. hence the lack of management.. plus.. on the east coast.. manangement is usually a reaction rather than a precaution..

on a side note, as fisheries and climate change, perhaps we are squidding too early in the year. maybe now is the time we should start. not 2-3 weeks ago like some of us have.... just a thought since the science and management on squid fishing is lacking...

We usually go there a few times a summer. Last year, just cuz it was fun I put a couple of fluorescent canyon lights in the water. Wow. What a show. There was a worm hatch going on and between them and the jellies, it was like watching a psychedelic movie. There were a few squid early on, but apparently some time after I went to bed they were all over the lights. Figures, nobody told me.

NICE! Good info Greg. I agree, Newport is further for me than Pt. Jude, and my boat wouldn't burn squat out to Block, probably the same $ it costs me too cross the NPT bridge with trailer! The only big ticket item of that trip would be a hotel, unless we run back to Jude and go home. Off season the hotels are pretty cheap out there. In like Sept or Oct my brother stayed at Ballards(I think) for 60+ bucks with his girlfriend. I think we may try it out! Maybe fluke in daytime, squid at night in the pond....

I think there is squid all summer in harbors of block. We used to go there for a fishing trip in Sept. for a week. We'd always pick up some in the harbor. Just not massive schools like you see (or are suppose to see!) in newport or hyannis.

King---I quite agree, though I don't think climate change would impact THIS soon, but rather that annual winter patterns may have more of an impact than previously believed (scientifically). Was it 2 seasons ago the run was short, but explosive (mid or late April through mid-May..something like 3 weeks if memory serves)? Recall that that winter (my first at URI) was mild..generally warm through Jan (like motorcycle riding warm) with only 2 major storms--one right before St. Pat's day. The past 2 winters have been colder, both with cooler springs---hmm, back to a 'normal' New England pattern perhaps. Given this, I think the run is coming, but will be prolonged like last year. Nature adapts its periodicities...its us humans that think there should be a definite schedule.

went out last night on a friends relatives private dock near newport and we found out the reason we didnt catch any squid was because there were stripers in the area. I landed a 26 inch striper on pink squid jig using a 5 foot ultra light pole with 6lb test line. that was probably the most exhilirating fish I have ever caught. I will post pics later once I upload them to imageshack or something.





Also who ever has those pics (I beleive someone said thay did) of the stingray caught last week I really would like to check those out if you can post them

Yeah, I would too. I've seen some massive rays swim under my lights, but never out of the water....

That's got to be one incredible ray. I've been fishing Narraganset Bay for over 40 years and never even heard of anything like it. Please, if anyone actually has a picture, post it.



Ps. I've heard that rays feed heavily on the squid that die after spawning so, if there was a monster around, its conceivable it would be in the area.

Yea, pics! I don't doubt it at all, I've seen some huge ones out at block while spearfishing, eery looking just sitting on the bottom with the siphon pumps going, I didn't go anywhere near it...



My brother caught one at night off the breakwater by Ballards, we had to cut the line, it was huge.

I was actually at Goat Island about 2 weeks ago and seen a group of about 4 guys haul in a giant Ray. That thing had to be at least 50 pounds! It was at night and managed to capture it on my cell phone. The picture isn't all that great, but you'll have a good idea of the size. Ill try to post that up ASAP.



As for squid! They are definitely in. Success seems to be during the morning hours, around 6am-1pm. A couple of my buddies caught about 3/4 a bucket at GI in the AM.

I was on the GI gridge sat night from 10pm - 2am. Someone had a ray on the sidewalk, middle of the bridge. Everyone was checking iy out. I'm not sure of the weight, but it was around the size of a trash can lid. It had to be around 25" around and appeared to be about 3 - 4" thick. I fished over by the wall with some friends I've met from here. Nodda, not one squid caught. We did see some huge females I believe schooling around under the massive bait ball we created. Maybe next week we'll have better luck.

Actually yes! Buddies just returned this afternoon. Said the best time was around 10:30am-12:00pm. Witnessed his 3/4 bucket with my own eyes. I am planning to go later tonight and return tomorrow, weather permitting.
