Yeah maybe. Anyone want to run the boats out to Block and try in the saltpond? Could be a good spot?

i recall catching a couple squid in the GSP when i was a kid a number of summers ago. late july time.

going to the island for a handful of squid is ALOT of work and gas IMO...

Three of us were at GI from 4 until 11 Sunday night. We had 3 total for the night.
There were a few brief flurries but they lasted for only a few minutes. Every once in a while you could see the schools, but they disappeared fast. One guy had 5 which was the most I saw. Jahab

Very very disappointing! I was sure that since I decided not to make the trek down to RI fr squid this w/e that everyone would be bailing them. Looks like another terrible squid run.

Anyone know what the fleets are catching off shore? Perhaps they sucked up the squids coming in last year or this year. Last year could make sense and explain the poor showings for last fall and this spring

Commercial fishermen out of south shore MA/ pt judith aren't doing nearly as well as they should be for this time of year. It seems like the run will be very late this year.

Actually thought about Block before, but I bet the ferry fare is not cheap.

I heard the same thing, I was listening to a guy complain about spending an entire tank of diesel for 7 squid...Maybe the squid too are in a recession? They cant afford rentals in the bay and are deciding to stay-cation in the depths.

Wouldn't surprise me <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> . I'm just hoping that it's a late run so my reservations for the Frances Fleet in 2 weeks will be during prime time!

a ferry ticket is cheap. 20 bucks or so round trip. it's the hotel that will cost you. plus cab fare to lug all your squid gear to the GSP.

Bit of a long stretch but do anyone think over the years we have been over fishing the squids? That might be the reason for last year and this year.

I doubt it's just the recreational fishermen... Probably a combination of commercial and recreational fishing, as well as natural predation.
Don't forget too that most populations of animals go through cycles of abundance and scarcity... I'm sure they'll come back in force eventually. Squid are much too fecund/efficient predators to be kept down for long.

Block is neither a long way nor a lot of fuel from pt judith... <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> It's closer than the newport bridge, plus a lot more fun once you dock.
We usually go there a few times a summer. Last year, just cuz it was fun I put a couple of fluorescent canyon lights in the water. Wow. What a show. There was a worm hatch going on and between them and the jellies, it was like watching a psychedelic movie. There were a few squid early on, but apparently some time after I went to bed they were all over the lights. Figures, nobody told me. Anyway, that was in August I think. But they were there.
Hello all,
Fished Gi for the first time on April 24th...with no luck, and again on May 3rd...we arrived at 2am (caught a few). Had my eight year old son with me both times..He's the one that talked non-stop all morning! The thing that struck me was the litter. There was none in April, but plenty two days ago. Having Heinekin bottles and McDonalds wrappers (not to mention an endless stream of butts) float past while jigging was pissing me off! Why people have to trash nice places is beyond me. Just wanted to get that off of my chest.
The endless stream of "butts" would be from the sewage releasal which is a few hundred feet away from the causeway. Talking about Crappy Squid... <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> |
