I say fire it up! Until we can actually get out there I enjoy talking about it. I have a question for anyone hwo thinks they have an idea . . . I know the briidges and piers are prime spots when the squid are running but is there other structure that attracts them? Maybe streep drop offs from a rocky shoreline or some other place we can try from a less crowded area than the bridge. If anyone has a thought I'll give it a try this spring and report in. C'mon Spring!!!!

I'm not sure, but I think squid are caught because they are passing under/by bridges and piers, not that they are necessarily attracted to them.

Well, 2009 is here!

I'm not sure what kind of year everyone else had, but 2008 was a strange one.

Migratory Stripers were reported in Maine, as early as February - How true that is, I'm not sure. Bluefish were here in early April, with a huge run taking place on Cape Cod, and then there were those squid things... Yeah, the ones that eluded me for a good portion of the year. For the first time in my "squidding career", I actually missed being "inked" by the things.

As usual, I took up residence at my usual spot, and night after night, only caught a handful of squid.

The only heavy run I saw, took place on either the last week of May, or the 1st week of June. Nonetheless, it wasn't impressive.

Let's hope 2009 is better than what we all saw last year.

Tight lines!

I am with you, last year was not a good one for me at all! Lot's of driving with few squid to show for my efforts. I hope I have a better year this year.

Looking forward to the season. Will be the first FULL season with the boat. Pretty excited!!

Tryin to get a light system together. Squid fishing is a complete mystery to me, but I know they like light. figured a couple of water-proof lamps suspended from my john boat on a calm night at the end of May might do it.

I got glow in the dark sibiki rigs and a few other LED gizmos, but haven't used them yet. Can anybody give a good location say between Boston and Plymouth. Please no spot burning.

do they like structure? Where are they going? Why? I'm talking around here in New England.

cheers,

-DP

ALL of my squid have come from the South!! I may be wrong, but I don't think you get many squid in that area in May. Boston has a decent fall run. In the spring I would focus on the South, Newport, Jamestown, Pt. Judith. Your light set-up sounds right.

I know we talked about buddy boating it out there for some squid last year, but I couldn't make it. Did you ever end up taking your boat out for a night trip? Any success?

I did make a couple of trips out of Pt Judith. Did pretty good. It was very early in my boating. Planning on hitting it pretty hard this year. Oh yeah.... got 7 bluefin last season on my buddies boat. Had one break the outrigger in two on my boat. So it ended up excellant tuna season for me!!!!

Back to the Squids..... definatly using the boat!!! you know the ratio of fish between boats and the shore!!

I have never taken my boat out squidding, but I think I will try it this year. Glad to hear you had success with the tuna last year...I didn't get out a whole lot as I was working on my fathers camp in Maine. Some friends had a great year. They do alot of trolling though, I haven't gone to the dark side yet and I just throw spinning tackle and fly tackle at them. I am concerned that the size of the tuna might not allow for this method this year...at least not with the equipment I have, might be time to step up to a Van Staal and a heavier stick (yea right, not quite in my budget).

I agree, most of the fish that we caught towards the end of the season were on the large side, 59 - 65 inches. On the troll, hoo's as bait. I had a few opportunities to cast to them but didn't have the gear. I should be all set for them this year. But the class of fish will likely be at or near giant size!!!! yee ha!!!

Can't wait hoping for an early season and tons of squid. TOny I bought several of the phermone skins (4 inches), expensive but pretty. Where can I get the 3.5 inch ones.

I have been looking for a weather window to get out for the cod/haddock. Looking forward to the squid run, my wife and I have a good time down there. I stayed away from the show at Stonehill, I am tired of the shows, and tired of watching it on the tube....I need to gitz mine..

I think that this thread should be closed and a new one for 09' should be started.
#19
I've seen some requests, so I'm trying to create a new 2009 thread.

Can we get the admin to pin this topic?

Waiting for the early reports!

Thanks,

George
