I started two years ago, this will be my third year. I have been fishing all my life and like to THINK I know a little about it, but for some reason, it seems like you have to be of Asian decent to be one of the top rods at GI...it baffles me... <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/clown.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' />
...now that I posted that I realize why the top rod is usually an asian...they comprise 90% of the people fishing down there...but they sure do have a knack for squidding!

If you talk to people about last season, they'll tell you to the man that it was a very bad year for squid. I've been fishing at the bridge for a number of years, and this was by far the worst one. Who knows why.
For starters, watch what the successful people are doing. No hardware, tie everything on direct. Also, you'll need a light-med sensitive setup. Squid can be very light hitters some nights, and you have to be able to feel the bite. Also, there are different ways to rig jigs. Some will work better than others on certain nights. Generally, feeding squid are near the bottom, so that's where you need to be. Unless of course you get into a good run, where I've had them it as soon as the jig hits the water.
Mostly, it's perseverence. If you put in the hours, you'll get the squid. However, having said that, we've all stood right next to someone slamming them while we get a couple. Same jigs, same rig, etc. It happens. It's a pisser, but it happens.
I see someone predicted April 15. I dunno. Sounds early. Watch the water temps at theh PORTS site (see link below). The Newport bouy is just north of the Pell Bridge, so it's a pretty good spot to monitor conditions. Only problem is that it gives surface temp, which is higher than most of the water column. Historically, water temps need to be above the mid-fifties at the level where the squid are. We've tried correlating temps, tide, and time with the bite, but we've never found a good pattern. Still, it's fun to try.
Hang in there. The next big run is just a few minutes away. Doubles and triples all up and down the bridge. But you really should have been here last night ............ Yup!

I believe most of the Asian sharpies there are Vietnames from Boston with plenty squidding experience from their country or summer jigging at Boston.

Just to get the juices flowing, here's a couple of pics for everyone. I think they are from a local party boat trip, but I'm not sure what year. (First time posing pics, so this is kind of a test.)

A reminder to everyone looking for gear. Don't miss the RISAA New England Saltwater Fishing Show coming up on April 4-6 at the Providence Convention Center.
http://www.nesaltwatershow.com/
Best spring showo in the NorthEast. Great place to look for deals on fishing gear before the season starts. If you dig around, you can find some bargains on squid jigs.
Also a plug for RISAA. This is a great organization that works hard to protect your rights as fishermen and fisherwomen, as well as protecting, developing and maintaining the local ecosystem of Rhode Island's ocean waters. Well worth supporting. Every bit helps. Last year they ran a couple of squid head boat trips for members only. Check 'em out at: http://www.risaa.org/

first off, Long time lurker (2 years), first time poster....
been squidding for a few years prior to finding this website. been fishing for 20+ years all over the northeast and gulf....
I am all for helping people out in the initiation of squidding with gear, techniques, cleaning, and the causeway,,,, but i am also for the protection of some spots... No more name spotting...... I will never fish the causeway due to the amount of people and crowds, i'm not into fighting for elbow room...
it doesn't take much for someone who wants to squid to take a little drive and scope out some spots, that aren't as mobbed as the causeway.
there are MANY spots that are very fishable with minimal effort to get to them.
take a day trip and drive around, it will pay off come may......

In Mass, my favorite spot while growing up was the inner harbor in Hyannis (Lewis Bay).
In RI, well... it's no secret <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Hey how's it going? I think we met at the Chieftain a couple weeks ago?
I have not taken the boat out for squid yet, but I am going to put wet towels over the sides and tie off buckets on the cleats so the squid never enter the boat and the sides of the boat are clean...my father would be pissed if I get his nice clean decks stained before one of his charters!
I am with you, last year was not a good one for me at all! Lot's of driving with few squid to show for my efforts. I hope I have a better year this year.
IF there's one positive aspect of this year vs. last year, it's that gas isn't over $4 a gallon so running back and forth to newport will only cost half as much as last year. (hopefully everyone here still has their job)
Looking forward to getting out there in the coming months!
