The weather last night was brutal. We got there around 830. The tide was very high, so decided to pick up some food. Came back around 930, caught two giant squids and left around 1100. It was tooooooooooooooo cold. But the good is they were biting.



Now excuse me. I have to go cook me some instant noodle with squids..

May 9 is a full moon, I believe. Which moon phase do you think is better for squidding? I haven't really been able to tell if one is better than another. Anyone?

I think you may be looking at 09's moon table. Full moon is today/tonight, new moon on May 13th.



As for phases, IMO in general I like the onset of a full moon. (I believe the moon light tends to make squid a little more active) However, squids can be very unpredictable compared to other sea life. looking back at some logs I've had new moons on a low tide with a very strong bite. The darn things puzzle me every year.

Has anyone seen or heard anything about contamination in the Bay due to the spring flooding? I understood that there were at least two instances where water treatment plants exceeded their capacity to process due to runoff and ended up dumping untreated waste water into the Bay. I don't know how long this would be cause for concern but its been a few weeks now and I haven't heard anyhting more.

They have opened up most of the shell fishing areas in the bay so it is probably ok for squid. RIDEM website will tell you which ares are closed for shellfish.

Hi Andy,



Just found out about this site this year, I will be sure to post up what I am seeing. I will be running Friday afternoon if the wind dies down out of Hyannis, and through the first week or two there for the day bite unless it is dismal.



The night bite in RI should be very good again at the end of May. I will be running night trips there or in newport if we get a decent run again. Last 2-3 years have been tough in Newport(tough everywhere else too) and I havent been able to warrant charging guys to go out and catch a few tubes. Last year was a very poor run altogether, but I had 4 or 5 really good trips in the day run, and a whole week of very good fishing at night at the end of the month.



I will be sure and keep you all informed here in this forum in 2010. Hope you are all at least trying now, the first scouts have come in, and after this blow we should see some better action. Good luck!

Even if I dont get any business out of it, looks like a cool forum to share some info with. I absolutely love to squid fish, still one of my favorite things to do with a rod and reel. Just wish they were a bit more predictable and around for longer stretches of time in abundance.

My hypothesis would be that we will get a cold night with the full moon and the light will have them chasing after it, all over the place.

I think as far as fishing for them by day, which I have had just as much if not more success with doing a couple of years ago, the trick of attracting them with lamps at night has got to be a drop in a bucket, when you consider a moonlit night.



Being there and paying your dues so that you are there at the right time and place, is the true secret to success.

I have been there when you are hooking two on a single lure and other times when I am inventing ways of harnessing the power from the jigging action to recharge cellphones.

I agree with the Doc 100%. Putting in the time and paying your dues on the water is not only the best way to catch fish but its the only way to develop the appreciation for the sport that makes it so rewarding when you have that special trip. Personally, I don't have the luxury of picking which days I go so I go when I can and enjoy it when I do.

When I rig up I always use an assortment. Usually including blue, pink and green. Then we try to see if they're hitting one color more often than the others. I don't know if one color is better than others at certain times of the year. Seems to me it would be more likely affected by the time of day/night.

just picked up a blue and a glow, lucky bait in warren has a huge selection.

Glow sounds interesting. Let us know how it works. Last year my son and I tried rigging cheap glow sticks to the line to see if that would attract the squid but it never seemed to do any good. Of course not much seemed to work for us last year anyway.
