#81
[quote name='Striper1' post='18118' date='Apr 5 2010, 06:42 PM']KGJ- WH a get Watch Hill but you said you are out o RI. Anyway I come out of CT and usually make a trek to the newport bridge area for squid by boat. If you have intell of squid in Watch Hill-Stonington area I am willing to learn on getting them closer to home.

Thanks

Hey Striper,

WH to me means Woods Hole... Sorry, sounds like you may still have to make the trek to RI!! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Headed down to the GI Bridge Tuesday night. Arrived around 11:30/12 and stayed until 3ish. 4 of us jigging small yo-zuris off the first third of the bridge.

Was another group of 4 guys who had just got there as well. Some very friendly college kids from Thailand. Very fun to hang with.

2 other guys also showed up for about half an hour and left. Didn't look like they had any action either.

Baitfish around the lanterns and some sighting of small squid but no action . Casted our ocean rods out with some squid on it from last season and nothing but what i believed to be crabs nibbling our bait up.

Felt great to be out there at least! Work the next day was pretty rough though.

Can't wait till the squid get here.

Does anyone know anything about East Greenwich Cove? I'm looking for a spot in Narraganset Bay to put my boat for the season. I have a spot on Jamestown if I want but EG Cove is less than half the price and the season is two months longer. At that price it's hard to believe there isn't something (other than the distance to the open water) that makes it much less attractive.

I think that they will be earlier.

I wish I was closer to check out my theory but as I am in CT it makes it tough for a test run.

I noticed that they came in around when the cherry blossoms were kicking @$$. They are in full bloom down here.

Anyone up in the Newport area able to report on the cherry blossoms?

the water temperature data can be seen here

I think we need a couple of nice warm days and we are going to see some action.

I am trying a different approach to jigging this year.

I want to fill the freezer.

I just got back from the GI bridge. My 1 yr old and I had a picnic in the severly-reduced parking area. I saw one guy jigging and no luck. It was just as the sun was setting. No wind and FAC sea conditions.

Here are a few pics of the construction and two signs on either side of the bridge.

Just the facts, Ma'am, just the facts.....

Now what?

Anyone have a barge we can borrow?

I say we get one and all camp out on it, with a flag flying "the bird" on it.

I didn't get out and look, but I am pretty sure the No Trespassing signs are for the blocked off ladders and what is below. I didn't really look over the side, as I had my little man in the car, but assume there is some sort of structure down there for workers to ...well.... construct on.... We'll be fine. There is plenty of space and no one ever fishes that old fueling dock on the other side of the bulkhead. The bridge construction has a big sign that they are using carbon fiber to rebuild the bridge. That sounds cool. It does match, carbon fiber on the sails at one end of the harbor and carbon fiber on the bridge at the other end. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Better bridge repair now then a complete shutdown later.

I guess I was up too late to be responding to the dea that the consttuction will thwart our efforts to wrangle tentacles. I am sure we can cooperate to make the season a memorable one.

I was @GI on the Sat. It was such a nice day. NO SQUID YET!

I love to smell of the ocean. It's time to fish again soon enough.

It's is my opinion that the construciton was not planned and is to discourage people form squidding. I would love to see the department of public works reason (civil engineering) for alterations. This type of construciton is either planned well ahead of time or in the event of an inspeciton faliure.

Is there a posting stating the construciton duration?

Thanks for the pictures. I was going to jig this week end for the first time this season but now I wonder if it will be worth the trip. That's a lie I love visiting Newport anytime of year.

I believe Newpowrt's reaction to fishing on the brigde stems from the few that litter and do not respect the town and it's traditions. I could relate to the locals and their conerns about cleanliness on the bridge.

I commend those of you who have made efforts to clean up after others. Several of us bring trash bags to pick up garbage left by others.

If you look at the big picture the majority of squidders aren't adding $$ to the local economy.

I wil adimit I spent plenty of $$ at the local taverns within walking distance of the bridge.

im sure they set at a public town meeting to discuss the issue and said 'lets do bridge repair to keep those pesky squidders away'

I'm pretty sure the bridge repair is not out to get the squidders.

no conspiracy here. just general upkeep to keep they city by the sea beautiful and people bringing their money back again and again. just bad timing

Looking at the pictures of the construction site, I wonder how people get out of those remaining 6 spots? back-up from the entrance?

I got a crazy idea - since the exit has been blocked, maybe we can have a valet parking....six more cars on the left lane.

They bull dozed a section of the divider.

The bridge certainly needs the work done. The salt water and air has done a number to it. The causway wall also looked a little rough this year.

Welcome to the forum Skeldog. Did Benny's have any pink jigs in stock? Last time i was in there they only had green and blue. If you end up going let us know how you make out.

Cheers,
