I know this is a squid report but since that season looks like it is over, has anyone had much luck with smelt. I have been into Boston twice but no luck. I would really like to get some for my Chistmas dinner

Local Seafood place here in Pawcatuck/Westerly has been bringing in fresh squid almost daily from a boat I believe is out of Stonington (I could be wrong on this one but I do know its local). Big tubes with uncleaned prices around 3.99lb (a whopping 10.99 for cleaned).

Also, mackerell makes for great sushi called Saba but does take a bit of work involving bone tweezers and a short marinade. AlaskaNaturally  did you catch them with hook and line or a throw net?

We caught them Sabaki rigs. We had a few with very small hooks, perhaps #12, that worked real well but we lost many lifting them from the water. The ones with #6 or 8 worked well and minimized fish shaking off.

We always eat Saba and the herring make great sushi also. Canned up a bunch like sardines so we can take them on our trips. Today, we're smoking mackerel, bluefish, eel, herring and trying squid.

On another subject: Does anyone know how to upload pics from our computer to this blog? Upon attempting to do so, a message comes up asking for a a URL. Any help would be appreciated.

I was catching them in better numbers in November. The most i got was 50 the bite has seem to slow down quite a bit and is hit or miss. A friend of mine got 9 in about 3 hours. I've been getting tommy cod mostly with some herring in the mix. Any Squid action down in Rhode island? I don't want to put away my poles just yet...

I quickly tried to create a gallery and post a picture into this reply and it wouldn't let me. I've found this all too common on these forums. One way I've used (not here but other forums) is I've created a number of galleries on a free wordpress page and upload the pictures I want to post there. Let see if that works here without an error message.
Yup, that works.
A bit more work but I grew tired of some of the odd ways forum platforms makes things next to impossible.
Your mileage may vary.

Besides freezing, we preserve squid by canning and drying. Squid jerky can be reconstituted or just eaten as a snack dry.

Martin, you seem to have the photo thing worked out. To get pics directly from your computer you need to go to "my gallery" (click on your user name) and then you can download from your computer to your gallery and then transfer pics from your gallery to posts. A little complicated and it always takes me time to do it since I don't often post pics and have to re-learn every time I do so. It would be a better world if all forums used similar methods but they don't, and I have to jump through hoops to get pics on most of them since I never remember which forum uses which system.

As a test, I attempted to do something similar. In this case I tried to link to the image in my gallery. The error message said I couldn't post the picture in that format. So it cannot be done just from the gallery itself. It looks like the method of direct linking an image uploaded to a gallery on this forum is to select "My Media and then "Gallery Images" and select the image and click Finish" Lets see if that worked.

But I cannot seem to add images to my Gallery from my computer. Doesn't appear to be a link that says add images or pictures. I even attempt to drag them from my computer's

It is not available in "My Gallery" but if you click on the main "Gallery"tab at the top of the page, you will note an "upload" button on the right. There will be an option to create a new gallery and upload files via a browse option. Hope this helps.Â

A friend who lives in Newport said the fishing has been very slow for the past week. He confirmed that there's still bait around. But what the heck: You don't need fish to go fishin'.

Water temp was just under 42 degrees, 13 mph winds and no moon. At least it wasn't too cold. One other car showed up but decided quickly as did we, that there was nothing to catch. Took the wife out for supper before heading back home.Â
