2017 Rhode Island Squid Report

Not on GI.  But within a mile radius.

One mile by land or by sea OneEyed? In other words from a boat.

By land fishing from shore, and sitting on a long piece of wood hearing loud music from across the sea to a place where they party till 2am.  = )

Went to GI on 9/1 night and got 8 small squids. It's abnormally cold at such early fall. But good news is squid smells it and they were swimming in.

Anybody gone out GI recently? I got 8 small squid last Friday, wondering if squid is moving in?

Fall Run Is Here

Going tonight and try our luck.  Otherwise, how else do you find out if they are biting.  Depending on the storm later in the week, who knows what that will do to conditions.

Was pretty foggy last night but managed to catch a little over 40 smallish squid.  Sunset was nearly a couple hours after high tide and once dark, lights attracted a ton of small bait fish and within a half hour the bite was on.  At first they were really small but as it got darker, they got bigger till the tide started to slack.  If they are still around in a few weeks, they should get bigger.  Lets hope the small fish holds them there till then.

My buddy in Edgartown reports the same thing, mostly underachievers (tiny ones) with some better sized ones mixed in. They are livelining them for albies and fishing them fresh dead in the surf for stripers.  MV striped bass and bluefish tournament has begun. Hopefully the fall run will start earlier than last year and be prolific. Heck with prolific, I hope it will be epic!! I hope to be patrolling the docks in about 11-12 days.

I would add pictures but I don't know how but caught about 5-6 pounds Sunday morning (12am-3am), all really small, like 2-3 inches average and a couple decent sized ones. Lots of bait, huge peanut bunker are everywhere but the squid are in. Couple weeks when the water gets colder then the bigger ones will move in, my guess. Anyways, they are out.

The small ones are great to saute in garlic butter whole, head guts and body. Then cut them like a sausage and enjoy. We learned this in Australia but they mostly just braise them on a barbie.

While still smallish, we cut up the larger ones for sushi and the smallest of them went into a pot of ramen whole.  Wife really enjoyed the treat even if it didn't total to a lot.  Given the last couple years am hoping for improving conditions.  I will say the smaller ones are really tender and were good eats.

Haven't been many posts lately. How are y'all doing in Newport? Has the Fall run begun? Hope to be up there next week. Any info would be appreciated.

Water is vey dirty. Churned up by the hurricanes passing the coast. Squid fishing was shut off until December 31 for commercial guys a few weeks ago! They reached the quota. Maybe that's why the spring was so slow!!! Not sure.

We didn't go out last week but my brother-in-laws did.  They managed to catch a decent amount and from what they said, a bit bigger than when we went a couple weeks ago.  I had wondered what the water was like after this last storm because Jose didn't seem to have any effect after a few days.  Don't know if the wife wants to go tomorrow night but will report if we do.

After checking the weather and tides, decided we'd give it a shot.  Seems my brother-in-law had the same idea as he arrived just minutes before we did. Water certainly wasn't clear but I was expecting worse.  Tide was going out and once dark, we managed to still attract bait fish with the lights. Fair amount of wind made it cold to be out fishing but water was relatively calm. A little slow to start but ended up with a little over 60 between my wife and I in about two hours. Still smallish but larger than a few weeks ago.

 

We arrived just before sunset and started a bit before dark.  No one was fishing but us for the the first hour and a half.  Had a couple people walk up to the bridge early to ask before we caught anything.  A small group of guys and one individual showed up late as the tide had almost gone slack.  Surprised at the lack of people trying on a Sat given the weather cleared even earlier than forecast.
