2017 Rhode Island Squid Report
Quote:Thanks again Dave. We won't fit. Our pickup camper sits 10.5 ft off the ground. Looks like we'll have to stick with Galilee or find other areas. Last year we did drive through Jamestown and saw a pier. Didn't have the time to try it. Perhaps that's a possibility.

There is actually some street parking, if you go after 9 p.m. I've only seen that full on the weekends. There is also decent jigging at Fort Adams with an abundance of free parking. The plus side of Fort Adams... If you aren't doing well with squid, you can throw some jigs or soft plastics for stripers and bluefish.

Thanks that will give us another place to try. We assume there is pier at FT Adams State Park?

You're welcome! Yes, I had a slide in camper and also a 5th wheel before. You definately need to do your homework before you head into "unchartered territories"! Haha

Quote:Anyone in favor of orange squid jigs? Color preference?

White, pink, orange, and green. I often use a holographic clear/white Yamashita Naory 1.8B with good results in the daytime and sometimes at night, otherwise usually use orange or pink, with green as a back-up if they stop hitting the other three. For a couple of years I never took an orange one off my rod and was still high hook in my area. I always use smaller jigs, with the Yamashita Naory 1.8B my current favorite, and always use size 2.0 or  smaller jigs whether Coleman's, Yamashita, YoZuri, or other makers. I use 4lb flourocarbon line, the thin line lets the smaller jigs have a better action in the water, thicker line impedes the action.

Gilligan is right on.  Small lines are your best bet, especially with the finicky squid.  I use 6 or 8lb because the area I fish have lots of structure where snagging weeds happens often.

I guess there isn't much to report on my end, been focusing my attention on the stripers.  Anyone catch any lately?  Might try them this weekend after my other rituals.  Any rumor of scup showing up yet?

I Was down by the Hyatt Hotel side on the bridge. Near the end.. The Big bass was trying to eat my squid jig, But would not eat a fresh piece of squid I put out on the water.

Small, soft plastics would have got him, according to Dave Pickering. He has been catching bass in the Bay non-stop with albino zoom flukes on a 1/2 oz. jig head.
