Mount Martha - VIC
#81
thanks guys, ill give it a shot soon.

i guess it never hurts to have both artificial and bait jigs just for the fun of it. i'll see how it goes.

Paul, with the rocks at the end of strachans rd what is the access like?.. is it a platform where u are close to the water surface, or is there a fair drop down to the water? carparking?

what are the snags like...should i take lots of premade rigs in case?

ive got a nice collection of fresh baits for snapper stocking up in my freezer, so hopefully ill get onto some nice landbased snapper across the season;-)

cheers!

Hi Calamarine,

You park at the end of Strachans road, Then cross the esplande and directly in the nature reserve area there is a little lookout, I simply walk down from here to the rocks below. People have instaled rod holders, and the rocks can be a little fiddley to walk around but they are quite good. you fish right on the water and Out about 15 feet from the edge of the water there is a rock shelf that rises up about 7 feet, be aware of this as this is a tackle grabber! It would be a good idea to have a couple of rigs pre tied and ready to go. The reef after the ledge is quite flat and the system extends for about 50 feet. If you cast just over the edge of the reef say 20-50 meters you are in with a real shot. I personaly have caught, Squid, Snapper, Whiting, and Garfish off this spot and in my boat trawling 20 meters off these rocks I have landed some Good Yellowtail King Fish.

Good Luck and let us know how you go <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbsup2.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':thumbsup2:' />

i fished mt martha yesterday. caught heaps of toad fish and one small flathead.

i had a squid jig out under a float but i didn't get any squid...though i was in a fairly sandy area without much reef so that was not surprising.

where did the garfish go? that was my main target species. i tried berleying but had no luck.

Haargh, 'twould be great to have ye back in Melbourne Jazman.

I've a couple o' questions for ye:

1) What is the regulation on having more than one squid jig on a line?

2) The squid bag limits, do they apply per angler or vessel?

3) The 40 fish bag limit is that per angler or vessel? (Not that I'll ever catch that many)
Fresh air, tight lines, scales, slime and fins, 'tis the salty sea dog life for me. Arrrgh!

Hi Mike, I'm really looking forward to fishing for snapper in the bay again! I've caught a few to 40cm offshore from Bateman's Bay, but only ever 1 or 2 in a session. In answer to your questions:

1) The rules state that you can have no more than 2 hooks per line - and a squid jig is classified as 1 hook - so you can have a maximum of 2 squid jigs per line.

2) The squid bag limit of 10 is per angler.

3) The 40 fish bag limit is also per angler. Some things you should know is that the 40 fish bag limit only applies to scale fish, not squid, or sharks and rays, and it also doesn't apply to bait species such as mullet or garfish - so in addition to your 40 scale fish (flathead, snapper, whiting etc), you can also legally have in your posession 40 garfish, 40 mullet, 10 squid, and sharks and rays (gummy sharks, elephant fish, banjo sharks etc, with each shark/ray species having their own bag limits). Why anyone would ever need to keep so many fish is another point, but those are the rules as set down in the fisheries regulations.

Thanks for clarifying that Jazman.

The limits seem awfully generous, why there would ever be a need to reach or exceed them is beyond me.

Last time I went floundering about two weeks ago, I missed 4 squid and that was in poor visibility, and wrong tide so I am keen to jig a few up. I am thinking of drifting with two whiting rods, two squid jigs on one rod and working an SP, what do you think? Too many lines in the water for one boat?

I want to maximise my exposure and liklihood of catching whatever is around but don't want tangles and cross-overs.

Or should I play it by ear while drifiting, or berley up some gars and work the floats?

Sorry mate I am full of questions.

Haha, I always have these sorts of arguments with myself, how many rods, which rig on which rod, etc. If it is just you in the boat I'd go 1 bait rod (with smallish hooks, size 4-6, so you can hook whiting as well as flatties), 1 squid rod and 1 rod to cast SPs on - that should keep you busy enough without tangles. Give that a go for a couple of hours, and if you get no joy, then anchor up and start burleying. If you start catching squid then I'd put a squid jig on the bait rod, so you'll have 2 squid rods and 1 rod for SPs.

If you decide to try 2 jigs on 1 rod then try and make the jigs quite different to maximise your chances - eg. a small and a big jig, or 2 different colours etc <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

where did you go out that you saw so much stuff in the water? i tried seaford a few times and only saw the odd mullet and occasional flounder. i'd love to get a shot at some more squid. never seem to have much luck when i target them from mornington....

so jaz, any chance your gonna try and go floundering when you are back? any chance i could tag along?

If I can fit in a floundering session then you're more than welcome to come Steeny, I'll post up trip details here if I go <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Thanks Jazman, yer a wealth o' knowledge. I will have one or two guys with me on the boat. But I was thinking the exact same thing.

Floundering conditions aren't the best, it is too windy, the moon is too bright and the tide is opposing. But I am still keen as mustard.

hi everyone,

we went to mt martha again on sunday hoping for some garfish. we only got 1 garfish because there was very few around.

we also caught 1 leatherjacket and also 1 australian salmon (which was an unusual catch for this spot).

in the evening we caught 9 medium sized squid....also there was a boat nearby that managed to get at least 5 squid.

hope you are all catching a few!

cheers, glen <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Wow that's great Glen, an Aussie salmon <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' /> And 9 squid landbased is fantastic <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' />

We got 3 rippers off Bateman's bay on the weekend on small Yamashita jigs, they were really hungry - a few times we saw a squid following the hooked squid trying to steal the jig from it! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Hi everyone,

I went to Mt Martha on Sunday arvo. The squidding was pretty slow. We only caught one and lost one.

We got about 20 small garfish. Was a good day to be out. The garfish seemed to actually be pulling the float under which was a nice change. Usually they just look at my bait and swim off! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

Cheers, Glen

Hi everyone,

I tried mt martha on sunday but it was pretty lousy!

No sign of life at all. No squid. No fish.

Not even a bite! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/fishing.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I tried Mt Martha on sunday arvo. Was pretty windy and the fishing was pretty bad. We only stayed for an hour or so but it was pretty crap. No bites at all.

Though I did manage to catch a tiny reef fish in a bait trap that I just bought for a bit of fun! Oh well, gotta start somewhere. I should be trapping octopus before long!
