Flinders report - VIC
Wow snapperman, that's one massive session! At least they got some.

Glen, I haven't really been fishing that much recently, with the new job I haven't had that much time for fishing, or for contributing to squidfish unfortunately! However, the boss is taking an RDO today so I have a bit of time.

My big news is that I recently bought a fishing kayak, which I have big plans for, including christening it off Beaumaris tomorrow morning, and taking it out off Flinders some time in the near future. I can also SCUBA dive off this kayak so when the weather warms up I'll be able to dive for scallops in the bay, and crays down the Ocean Rd. The kayak is a "Fish n Dive" by Cobra:

Hopefully we can catch up soon for a squid fish or flounder.

Hi Glen

Back to Uni! Good on you, I don't miss the homework that's for sure.

I caught a few small pinkies and couta from the kayak on Saturday, it was quite sloppy though and a bit of a workout to push the kayak along. I haven't been floundering for months, I'm hanging to get back down to Blairgowrie again <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

Was out on Flinders pier all yesterday for nothing. Nobody caught a single squid, woulda been there for a good 6 hours at least and didnt see anyone pull up a thing.

The water and sunshine was beautiful so I didnt mind at all, hehehe.

how did you go chino?

badluck Fatboi, i have found flinders to be pretty hit and miss....if you get desparate, next time try some float fishing for the leatherjackets....but make sure you set the float very deep (so the bait is near the bottom), and cast just next to the pylons....and use a tiny hook....size 14 or 16....and keep the bait very small.......and you should catch a few....a bit of berley helps.

best of luck, glen

Some huge calamari continue to call Flinders home with most anglers who are fishing the area doing very well. The squid fishing at present is as good or better than it has been all season.

hi everyone,

i went to flinders this arvo with my dad. we got 2 squid. one was smallish and the other was a nicer one

(maybe 0.75kg). also got quite a few leatherjackets on pippies.

i only saw 2 other squid caught and maybe 2 others that were lost. the water was dotted with heaps of squid floats. I think i could see at least 30 floats just from where i was standing. so it was a pretty poor catch result on the whole but it was quite a nice day to be out. And we had a little fairy penguin to keep us amused (who kept swimming up and down the pier!).

Cheers, Glen <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

G'day Glen

Nice to see you had a good day out even if you only got two.

Seems the boat fisho's are the ones getting on to the squid as most peirs have been quiet on the squid front.

Cheers

I fished off flinders yeaterday and caught nothing. There were pleanty of boat out but I could not see anyone doing any good. I had the missforture of having sammy the Seal follow me all day. Let me say that he wasn't welcome, and looked quite full of fish.

I think the run of squid is still a few days away

Quote:FLINDERS:

Matt Cini from Reel Time Fishing Charters fished the Flinders area during the week. He landed 5 squid to 2.2kg and 2 gummy sharks of 6 and 7 kilos.

Customer Scott Trafford also headed down to the Flinders area fishing from the Pier on Monday. He landed a squid of 2.5 kilos which we weighed at the shop. It was taken on a silver whiting on a squid prong and boy was it big!

Hi Shahzad,

My latest fishing report is viewable from the link below, it was updated yesterday. As for the Flinders area you should fish over the weed beds, this is relivant if your fishing off the pier or from a boat. The best method for landing large squid in this region is with the use of a baited jig. The best bait is silver whiting, but pilchards and other small fish also work very well.

You can read more about squid fishing off this site or you can follow the links on my site and read a full article on Squid fishing.

Go Well and Good luck, please feel free to email me privately or use the forum. If you use the forum everybody gets the advantages of your questions.

Cheers

HI Guys

I am planing on a sqiud fish at flinder's tommorrow via boat am I wasting my time or is now the start of the squid fishing season? <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/as.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' />

Squid fishing was hot Saturday morning 2nd sep, with a few 3kg, many 1-2kg and 500gm squid coming up.

Larger squid taking whiting under floats, smaller taking jig imitators worked through weed. Cuttlefish still around.

Well, going back Sunday/monday, it was dead. There one day, gone the next. Saturday I saw at least 15kg of squid caught in 4hrs. Sunday/monday, maybe 1-2 squid each day. One guy spent all Sunday night/monday morning for 1 squid.

Are they always this frustrating??

thanks for the report dave, i have always found flinders to be hit and miss...other places seem more consistent....beats me why that would be the case.

welcome to the forum, cheers glen <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' />

Thanks for the welcome Glen.

Only took up the squid fishing a few months back.

Loving the fresh bait and calamari rings.

Got a few tips from this site, so thought I'd join and share my reports.

Dave.
