Flinders report - VIC
Fished Flinders pier 23 April 2009. Brought home 3 small squid - 20cm hoods. Tasted good! Most others on the pier were catching some too - to 30 cm. Lures of various colours were generally more successful than baited jigs. Time of day and tide didn't seem to make any difference. Saw up to 3 calamari at a time checking out my lure but had trouble enticing them to take a bite.

Went to Flinders with a mate this morn. 10th Aug 2009. Only ones on there at 4am.

Tried floats and baited jigs for the first time.

On sun up, got one med sized 30cm hood. 20min later got the biggest calamari I have ever seen. 50cm hood not including tentacles. I will post photos when my pal emails me them.

That was it. 2 hook ups both on baits. Thanks to Rob for his tips about the thumpers out the end of the pier. I am converted to using baits as a back up. I prefer atrifical jigs but there is no agrument in my mind, baits and floats won this morn.

Took a peek at Portesa later 10am... nada.

On another note, I saw japanese guy there with one of those ninja style extendable squid gaffs. It certailny looked the goods and he let me flick it out to test its coolness and indeed it was... although at $250au (according to him) i will stick with my $15 drop net.

cheers,

I saw those squid gaffs in hong kong. They were really expensive over there as well. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />

Went to FLinders this morn, got there at 2:30am. Wind blowing hard. Uncomfortable to say the least. No squid. Coupe of others at the end of the pier got a couple medium but you had to be either super keen or mad to be there. We split just before sun up (wrong idea I know) as the wind was killing us. Lots of crew rocking up as we left.

Used baited jigs again, I hate using bait, gonna take some disposable gloves next time, all that stinky sh*t really annoys me I gotta say. But you gotta do what you gotta do sometimes.

Shoulda gone to Queenscliff. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

going there tomorrow <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' /> sooo happy! i don't get to squid there much as i have a fear of driving on unfamiliar roads. usually my brother drives but i might try it so i can get familiar with the road there - then more squidding at flinders for me <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />

I'll let you know how i go!

The water was beautiful as always, so was the weather, just no squid. Got there 2 hours bofore high tide. Didn't see anyone catch any squid. Saw a few people at the end catching whiting and mullet... i think i also saw one small trevally caught. will have to try again soon. Still enjoyed myself, but it would have been great if there were some squid in the bag. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Must be too many jigs in splashing in the water. Do squid get scared off by that?

Went to Flinders 5th / 6th Dec. Got about 11 decent sized Calamari for the two days. Dropped about 6 others due to light hook ups and one net f@*k up. Lots of good squid getting caught.

Baited Jigs were the go. Had a mate in a Kayak out the end of the pier (300+ metres out) and he picked up 3 good squid, drifting jigs in a short time.

Best times were 2 hours after the tide change from low to run in high. Close to high tide being the best.

We fished the morn (5am) - arvo (2pm). Not the night.

On Sunday as we arrived, we saw a guy pulling in a huge occy. The head was the size of a big grapefruit, it was very, very pissed off.

Also tried Portsea over the two nights got zip. I am taking portsea off my 'places to go for squid' for the time being, too many people and no squid.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Awesome report. I need to get my rear-end in shape and get going as I haven't been lately. Although last time while rock pool jumping at Sorrento back beach we spotted a huge occy in a crevice at low tide.

Hi nala,

I went 23rd of Jan Friday night, about 8pm to 12pm had to leave early as the wind really started to pick up late. First time I've been squid fishing and had an absolute ball, floated a live bait jig with some pilchard off the end of the pier and caught 2 squids within an hour, one was about 40cm the other 30cm. I think I had done considerably well for a first timer and it was also low tide around 11:15pm.

My first intentions was to go fishing at Flinders but after doing a bit of research and stumbling on to this site I am now hooked on squid fishing, there is some very useful information on this site and I would like to thank everyone for their input.

Could someone please tell me if this is a calamari or cuttlefish?

cheers

Thanks for the report Kraken, awesome catch first time out.

Squidding is definitely fun. And Flinders has produced the biggest sized calamari I have ever caught. Although I believe Queenscliff gets some big suckers as well. Definately having a look through the older thread topics on the site lots of very good advice and ideas here.

Cheers,

Went to Flinders this Morn. fished the run out from 6:30am - 12:30pm. Fished the end of the pier.

First 2 casts on a imitation prawn jig by my mate landed two good sized squid. Followed up by 11 for the day. All except one was landed on imitation jigs. Had a couple of baited jigs out and only got one landed.

All 11 a reasonable size abput 30cm hoods, 4 crackers though.

Usually at Flinders the baits seem to work the best I find, but today was an exception for sure.

There was heaps of activity in the water, bait fish every where, lots of other bigger fish around as well.

Smooth calm conditions mostly, and we could see the calamari hunting the jigs a lot of the time.

As we were leaving another squidder had pulled up 3 crackers on baits fishing the end of the pier, left hand side.

Good day all round. Hope this helps.

Cheers,

nala
