hi everyone <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> just wonted to no what u guys reckon is the best way to jag a squid when it hits your jig i lost some big squid tonight the squid wer taking the jig then when i lifted the rod the squid spat it out. The next hit i tried to jag it and i puled it strait out of its tenticles and out of the water they then disappeared and i didn't spot another all night <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' /> . I was land based and the squid were right in the shadows.

sharpen your barbs and give it another go, believe it or not but the barbs do go a bit blunt and need a touch up.

shallows fishing is my favourite way of squid fishing.

dont try and hook them like you do with a fish as well, the're way too soft for that. if they want the jig they'll wrap it up and you just have to keep the line tight and bring them in slowly, like your pulling in a big piece of seaweed or something. keep a net or gaff handy too because one day you'll get that monster you cant lift out of the water and it'll fall off and you'll be dirty on yourself for the next month.

dont be too sure about that , if they are just coming up and tasting my jigs the second I see them touch the jig I will give it a light strike and the amount of fussy squid I get this way is amazing.

You don't strike squids. Once you've realized you have one on your jig, hold the rod steady while the squid has a few pulls and let it set itself. A lot of times if you reel in as soon as u feel anything at all, or if it's grabbed the lure on a retrieve, its usually only by 1 or 2 tentacles.

So good thing to do is as soon as you feel anything... Pause, if there's a surge, then you know you have a squid and not weed, Let the squid win about a meter line so it can get some more legs around the jig, then its good as gold. Soon as the squid feels as it's won, it will use more tentacles to hold the jig as its easier for it to take swim away with it.

Also on the retrieve, keep the rod tip high so you can get the squid surfaced early as possible. While a squid is submerged, that's when it will surge and give fight. Once it's at the surface it doesn't give much fight as a majority of what the squid uses as propulsion is air instead of water.

Hope that helps.
