I went out late last night after seeing other people catching squid at the boulevard. Caught 10 but believe if I went earlier around sunset I probably would have caught more. If it doesnt rain this evening Ill try again.

Hopefully higher numbers will be around later this month during full moon.

Just got back from a 5 hour squid hunt.

It was slow at first but when the tide came in we hit them good totaling 57 squid.

2x - 24 green led fish lights worked great and kept the school circling around our boat for hours.

I tried the willows saurday night. Wasnt much going on. I got 2 squid in 2 hours and didnt see too many being caught

Anyone else have luck on the fall run? Cold front came through last night with new moon coming tomorrow. Thinking about going out.

Well FWIW, went out last night and found some. Not me but another guy caught 1/2 bucket in about 2 hours. I got .... 1 with that time. 

 

There must be something I am doing wrong.

Squid around now are summer over squid, the "fall run" won't really start until the end of the month, earlier if we're lucky but the last couple of years it has been late, not really heating up until October. What kind of gear are you using? I use a light, short (5'), sensitive rod with four pound flourocarbon line and I prefer Yamashita Naory jigs in the 1.8B size. YoZuri Auri Q RS jigs in 1.8 size are pretty good also. If you are using heavy line on a long (7' or more) heavy or medium rod and large jigs you will not do well unless they are in thick and hungry. I presume you are on the north shore area, so a trip to Tomo's Tackle in Salem may be a good idea for you. Tomo has a lot of the best jigs and his prices are reasonable, and he can tell you which are doing the best catching. I prefer white or white/red head, orange, pink, and green jigs. When the squid are finicky I sometimes go down to the smaller 1.5 or 1.6 size jigs. I would not recommend using heavier line than six pound when using the 1.5 and 1.8 size jigs. Did you watch and see what kind and color jig the guy who got the half bucket as using? Always copy the high hook. And even ask questions. I often do better than others partly because I have been doing it for over forty years and I gladly give tips to those who don't catch as many as I do. I do fish mostly from docks and piers and my above gear works really well for those places.

I've been fishing for 2 years on squid now and have a collection of jigs (figures.....). I did copy what the other guy were using yesterday. He was even using a light sinker at the beginning when the tide was running and then took it off after the tide slowed down. At least from what I was seeing, I have pretty much the same setup, except I have a longer rod and using 8lb line. They were hitting white and pink jigs which I had on both also.

 

I had to figure that the jigging method isn't correct or somehow the dropper loop tie to the jig isn't long enough for the jig to be "active". Hopefully I have another chance to go out  before the cold sets in.

 Sounds like you have a decent outfit. I never use a sinker unless the tide is really ripping and I use a tiny snap with no swivel which makes it easier for my older eyes to change jigs but also imparts good action to the jig. Squid were hot last year right into mid November so hopefully you ill have more shots at them, and the action should heat up in early October.

last Saturday was all most no squid except 2 that they show up close to my light they look at my jigs end left slow. The Saturday before 32 most very big, but i loose 5 jigs. So i was curious to see what was under the dock where i was fishing. I found out someone drops some lobster traps in the water than the people who fishing to lose their jigs.I remove 5 traps with my friend and a bunch of ropes. Last Saturday, when i get up there the water, was low and when i turn on my light i found out someone drops traps back to the water. I clean the place again from the lobster and i didn't trash it this time. I dropped back to the water somewhere else where no one fishing. That's for now. No squid but i clean the area as much as i can. Tight lines guys !!!

It is BAD business to move other people's traps. I know people who put lobster pots under piers and docks, lobsters hang out in such places, they are not putting the traps there to catch jigs, it is the lobsters they are after. You can be prosecuted for moving another person's traps and it gives the rest of us squidders a bad name. If you are losing jigs to traps just don't drop so deep or move, but do not move other peoples gear.

Please dont move lobster traps. It is illegal to do so and if the person who owns them sees you moving them, it could get very ugly very fast.

Caught some from a kayak off Beverly.  Some big tubes.  Olive was the color.  Great bait and great eating.

Just updating my fall squid progress... I've been going to the canal east end trying up to 2/hrs after high tide with not much luck. Last year it was already going pretty good there by this time but not much there yet ( I got one in about an hour and a few were caught around me) On the plus side the ones that were caught were huge long fin squid. I might make a trip to Goat island tonight but have not heard any info about how it is there. Anyone get down to Provincetown yet this fall? Its a long ride for me but worth it if they are there.
