2017 North Shore Squid

I was really lucky last week. I went at the 8pm high tide and into the night. I Saw a few pods of squid at the surface one pod had about 8 squid another about 5 or 6. Ended up with 10 squids in total at about a 5-6 inches long with a few babies in the mix. A few other people caught one or two maybe three. I was the lucky one that night but it was short lived. Im going tonight, leaving at Midnight and catching the 2am high tide under the lights. I'll let you all know what I get.

Salem Willow Friday night at low tide coming in, i was surprise no one was fishing at all.  Spent 3 hours got 3 squids , than i realize why no one was fishing haha.

4lb test, wow. I've been using 15lb. No wonder so many guys out fish me down there. 

 

Do you lose a lot of jigs?

The 4lb flourocarbon is the trick, but best when fishing from docks and boats in shallow water. 6 lb is OK, but I have worked my way down from 10lb and the lighter I go the more squid I catch. Not so good for high bridges or offshore deep water. I try to stay away from the spiles and the bottom, do lose some on occasion, but not that often. Also need a light sensitive rod for the light line, it doesn't work that well on say a seven foot medium action rod. The main thing about the light line is that it gives the smaller "prawn" style jigs a better action. If you are using heavier gear and are getting out fished by others and you notice they are using small rods with very light line make the switch, it should increase your catch.

What do you recommend for fishing offshore in deep water? 

 

I do okay down at the pier but plenty of guys out fish me. I've been using the small Yamishita jigs in pink.

Some monster squid offshore still. We used this guy to try and catch a tuna but he was killed by the other squid. The body including the longest tentacle was 20" total. My personal best squid. Snagged it on a sabiki jigging for mackerel.
